What's the difference between indoor and outdoor water based paint?

Other than the obvious...
I have an old wood porch swing that sits in the rain and is never used. Its for looks only and it doesn't have to look new. Old and shabby adds to the antique look. It hasn't been touched and the wood is so dry that the spousal unit tried spraying it with a rattle can (bless her darling heart) and you can't tell it was touched.

I have some leftover white indoor water based paint and thought before I throw out the swing, why not put a coat of the indoor paint on it to see what happens? What's the worst thing that can happen? I am not a painter and really don't want to put more money into the swing.

Imput welcome. Fire suit is on so go ahead and flame away.

^ Buy a quart of outdoor water based paint.

Paint 1/2 the swing indoor, 1/2 the swing outdoor and run an experiment. Post results here

Too much trouble. I figure I can slop the stuff I have on there in 30 minutes and if it will last a year or two its all good. If it ages, I'll call it patina! I just don't want it to wash off in the first rain storm and I have a mess on the ground.
Am I wasting my time?

Only if you cannot answer your initial question.
Sure, you can slop the stuff on, but that won't answer anything. I think your question is worth more than the swing itself. In the name of science!!!This is bigger than both of us now. If you don't do it, I will, and make a youtube video, and make $10's of dollars in the process.

I've heard bad things about that friends and family stuff.

Go ahead slap on the indoor!

We're talking about an old swing in the corner of the lot for decoration only. Think rusty old water pump, wheel barrow or tractor as deco...
So is the indoor paint doable for a quick touch up on old dried out wood unless someone else has expertise to advise if this is a bad idea.

Use what you have on hand and be done with it

And additives. There are regional differences in paints. If you buy SW in the South, it will have a mildewcide (or did). In AZ it's more sun and heat resistant with less focus on moisture problems.

In another category is gloss and hardness. Exterior paints don't look that good on interiors. Some will still use a high gloss on interiors but they are just using an exterior paint for all I know. On the flip side, no one looking for longevity would use a satin egg shell finish on the exterior intended to have a soft look.

There are, of course, flat paints for the exterior but they have different resins and filers. The pigments all come out of the same mixing system. You won't find a difference there.

And as likely as not, you will see paints labeled "interior-exterior."
