Waterproofing a wooden fence

I'm putting up 60 feet of wooden stockade fence and need to waterproof it. Any recommendations for a good waterproofer/sealer that will last a few years and since I don't have a Wagner Powerpainter, can you spray it with an HPLV 1.3 primer gun?

The easy answer, and I am coating my 6 month old deck this weekend, is there are more options than I have brain cells available.

True. Depending on the type of wood and your preference for either a stain or clear coat, the world is your water-proofing oyster.

BTW, I tend not to spray on stain...I use a roller. Much faster and less waste. I have a sprayer I have not used in 20 years. It was a bad idea.

Why not purchase pressure treated stockade fencing?

I have an undercoating gun and hit my cedar fences with Messmer's UV Plus. $70/ gallon on amazon - delivered. My wife was pissy about my spraying chemicals on the fence until she saw the results. Pretty amazing what it does to old sun bleached wood. Application with undercoating gun I do about 10' per minute.

Generally every few years I hose fence down until it looks wet, then it smells bad and I worry it'll never dry and about a month later its dry and the fence looks like new.

Can't say its the best or anything but its what I use and I'm very happy with the results. Alternative is let your fence rot then buy and replace boards.

Shaun - This is a picture I just took of our backyard fence. It was made with those panels you can get pre-made from HD that are stapled together. We treated it with Behr wood stain/sealer, using a garden sprayer that you usually spray bug spray with.
This was all done well over ten years ago, probably more like 15 or so. It works good.

Picture was shot looking through a screen that's why it looks crappy.

This is what I'm looking for, thanks guys.

Scott, that's really impressive but I am pretty sure MA weather will take it's toll after even just 2-3 years.

Thompsons water seal doesn't. I've used CWF (clear wood finish) by Flood in the past, it revitalizes old cedar and makes it look almost new and waterproofs very nicely indeed... Expensive, but .....

Today's pressure treated doesn't have much copper-sulphate in it.
I suspect because it's applied while the wood is still fresh and can't absorb much. It's best to wait a year for the pores to open up and reapply from a jug.
It will turn it green..

The 6x6's that were used to ring my garden are falling apart and rotted through, after less than a decade with a couple coats of oil stain (Cabots doesn't last outside).

I have 1.25 acres for my lawn. I put 4 rail fencing on three sides of it 20 years ago.
I used pressure treated lumber for the whole works and it's as good now as the day I installed it.

We used PENOFIN on our small fence that is in front of the propane tank. Went with a more natural shade over a colored.

Good penetration(what she said) and the fence looks as nice as it did three years ago. I’m very satisfied and will use it on all future wood products. The color of the can dictates what it is used for.
