Popcorn!

Has to be my favorite snack.
Yesterday I spotted these in my local Meijer....$2.39 each. I haven't tried one for many years, so I thought why not?
They pop up super easy and it turns into a huge portion of popped corn. It was labeled as butter flavored, but I added some Orvilles butter topping to make it better.

No mess...no fuss.:)

As kids we loved watching it expand. I bet kids today would love to see it popping.

^^^
I followed the instructions by pre-heating the burner and it was done amazingly fast.
I would guess two minutes or less.

You always have the best snacks, when can I move in?

I bought the microwave version that looks like a movie theater popcorn tub and it pops up in the tub ready to go. I think I got it at Menards.

I'm a classic example of a 'sucker shopper'.
When in the grocery store..if I'm hungry, I buy whatever looks good.

It leads to a lot of bad choices, but at least I tried.:)

I sometimes play a made up game of trying to buy something that I’ve never bought before when I’m in the grocery store. Yeah, I’m a blast at parties.

Yep, I also love popcorn, and think it's a relatively healthy snack. I don't get stuff that's full of hydrogenated oils. Mostly these days I mostly eat this stuff.

But I don't eat it plain. The "plainest" version that I eat would be ^that^ with garlic powder or maybe garlic salt. (I use more garlic powder, or if I use garlic salt, I use less).

Or when I really want it tasty (which is 99% of the time) I'll sprinkle a little smoked paprika, tiny bit of cumin, little chipotle powder or cayenne powder, and then some garlic powder.

I sprinkle a little in the top of the bag and then shake the bag. I may sprinkle a little on the top of the bowl once I've dumped it from the bag into a bowl.

a little spice on the popcorn is the best. Years ago, I worked at a bar where we had a small version of a movie theater popper. If you put tobasco in with the oil and kernels, it makes the best popcorn I've ever had. It also makes your eyes water, your nose run, and you cough. The cayenne or chipotle powder is much easier and gets you 95% of the way there.

^^^ I've seen the Skinny Pop Popcorn in the store....but never tried it. (I usually equate skinny with not tasting good)
I'll get some next time.

I love those. Had one a few years ago. Not allowed to eat popcorn anymore though. I just had some black raspberry ice cream after supper (not suppose to have that either)

When I was a kid, those commercials used to drive me into a frenzy. We only had that stuff once or twice. This is what we used instead.

I believe it is. I would have had no idea back in the day, but the signature on the box is Joe Namath.

stevej37 05-31-2023 04:30 PM

^^^ I believe we had a similar one back in the 70's (ours wasn't endorsed by Joe)
The top round tray held a partial stick of butter....worked well for that time.

Yep, butter in the top. I can't remember if we used that feature or if mom just melted it in a small pot and poured it over the popcorn after. The pop feature worked well.

I eat a decent amount of popcorn. Recently I got some Black Jewel.

https://blackjewell.com/

It's good. I put a decent mount of butter in metal bowl and melt it, toss in the popcorn from the pot on the stove (olive oil on the bottom) and shake it around with salt. I can't say it's better than Orville's, etc., but it's good popcorn.

stevej37 05-31-2023 05:31 PM

^^^ real butter is the best for popcorn...imo
But it has it's drawbacks...

flipper35 06-01-2023 12:37 PM

Not many drawbacks compared to all the fake flavorings.

I used a local (RR1) popcorn with coconut oil from them as well. No coconut taste with it. Get it nice and hot in a pan and melt the butter afterwards while the pan is still hot.

I have tried several different "heritage" popcorn kernels, and used to make it in a pot on the stove. I think I used grapeseed oil, and maybe walnut oil.

Ghee would probably be the ideal/best oil to cook popcorn the old fashioned way.

I tried the Skinny Pop Popcorn last night.
It's not bad...a quality corn that pops up great.

With some Orvilles topping...it was very good.

They used to package in in a different kind of package, I think it was a box that expanded. I liked that better, and when they had enough people hooked, they switched to a bag which is still good, but not as good.

It's not as greasy/oily as some. I assume that's good (no hydrogenated oil). It's salty, but not super salty.

Like I said, I spruce it up with some spices. I think I found some brand, maybe Orville's that offered a "garlic salt" flavor and though "that's GREAT!" I expanded from there.

Glad you enjoyed it.
