getting rid of a time share?

I bought a time share years ago when they were the " thing to buy" which I am not sure they were really ever. Anyhow I dont use it and I want to give it away so I dont have to pay the maintence fees any more and not worried about losing the investment I just want out. Do I have any options? I called clarke howard and they had nothing for me as for help..

Ugh, we sold ours. It was an outfit in FL. I think we had to pay a few hundred bucks up front to list it. It took a few years, but it did eventually sell.

Buying the darn thing was the biggest mistake ever. We were on a family vacation. The sad thing is that my MIL husband (used car salesman) was probably the main reason that we bought. He "worked a deal". We did use it a few times at least.

A friend has two. Side by side, same weeks. Great fun to go be next-door neighbors at the resort every so often. We've been over there many times over several years.

They have offered to let me buy the second one for a dollar- No thanks.

I wish you well. Hope you get a sale soon.

I have never met anyone who did not regret buying their time share. I wouldn't touch one with a 10' pole. But then I also rarely spend more than two nights in the same place when I'm on vacation.

Psych 101...don't even think about "giving" it away...just put a "sucker's sale price" on it and you'll likely generate more interest

We usually use ours or we rent it out for 1 week which covers the mntc fees for the year.

We have owned a Time Share since 1981. It's in Kissimmee Fla. We have never stayed at the place where we own. We have traveled all over the USA, south America, etc. If circumstances were such that I was unable to go - the wife took her GF's and they made a 'girls week out' of it. If we were unable to go, due to some last minute change, we rented the week we own in Fla. Never a problem - since its minutes from Disney.

YMMV. Carry on....

I'd bet Mo is "trading" the use of his timeshare near Mickeyworld for vacations (other timeshares) in other locations...

I own one in Hawaii. We go every year. Beachfront, two big bedrooms, kitchen, big family room, balconies. We love it. Enough room for our family and a few friends. It's been great.

You could always rent a condo or timeshare in Hawaii. The key is avoiding hotels. It's not just that the restaurants are crazy expensive, but you spend your whole vacation coordinating things and herding your family around. With a condo and a great kitchen I can get up, have breakfast and coffee and go for a swim before my kids wake up. And barbequeing in Hawaii is great fun. Can't do that in a hotel.

But yeah, you don't need a timeshare for that I guess.

Rent it and ask the renters if they want to purchase at a great price.

BTW - Where is it?

What happens if you just walk away ie stop paying yearly fees ??

I've got one in Maui(Westin) which we have made use of and will be going to this year. The program is also on a point system which we use in Westin hotels in the US and Canada. So it certainly has not been a great investment but we do make use of it. Would I do it again....definitely not. They've got you by the short ones with their yearly maintenance fees.

Us too....we own a week (floating) in a 2 bedroom unit on Kauai, which we bought as a resale....beautiful place! We enjoy going back there once a year and will often bring friends or family as the unit sleeps 8, so we have lot's of room. But.....as Venetian points out.....they've got you by the bawz with the maintenance fees!....the only way they go year to year is UP!

mb911 / Ben have you tried listing your place on bidshares.com? That's where we bought ours. It's a timeshare auction type website that puts you in direct contact with buyers/sellers.

Would I do it again?......probably not...

Cheers!

Alex
