The new quarter.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1686576319.jpg

Yesterday I actually used cash to buy something, and I received 50 cents in change. I put it in my pocket and left. That night, I happened to feel the two quarters in my pocket and a lifetime as a coin collector I was forced to look at what they were by instinct. I have a lot of silver coins from my youth from that habit.

On the left, the quarter we all know from back in 1976 era, but the same portrait for many decades.

On the right, WTF, George is looking to the right, not the left, and wait is that a pony tail? When did George grow a distinct ponytail? And his head is "zoomed in" as he has less neck, so his head is larger. On the old quarter it looks like some ruffles on his collar, or maybe that is a ponytail, I never really noticed.

On the back is an image of Bessy Coleman looking at an airplane.

I grabbed this image from the internet.

In my younger days I would be buying some sets from the Mint to stuff in the safe with the other coins. Now, I don't care much. They are not worth much more than face value for most of the sets from the mint.

Anyway, just an interesting change to the portrait of ol George.

At least it still says "In God We Trust".

He's got a ponytail on the old quarter, too. It's funny, you google him and most pictures don't show it. Supposedly all his own hair.

I heard on some podcast he didn't chop down a cherry tree, either. Some other myths:

George has always been looking in both directions .... it just depends upon how you view the quarter.....

Bring back the wheat pennies and get off my lawn!

I'm still pissed the standing liberty quarter was discontinued after 1930. I'm starting to get over it. Those were coins. Now they look like Disneyland tokens on the back.

Even worn, they looked great.

I'm gonna have to go find my decades old Band-Aid tin full of Wheaties and pre-64 silver coins .... haven't had to put any in it in years :(.

Don't know if I've ever even seen a Liberty qtr. in my pocket change even when I was a kid....

Steve Carlton 06-13-2023 07:53 AM

They were scarce when I was looking in the mid-60s. I used to go to banks and buy rolls of coins, go through them, refill, then buy more rolls. It was fun. I found a few steel pennies, too.

When I was in 6th grade the school required each kid to buy a lunch token every day, and it cost a quarter for lunch. (OK, I am a geezer) Anyway you HAD to have the token, and not a quarter to get lunch. The good news - bad news for me was the person selling the tokens stopped at our room last. He would let me look through the change for silver quarters nickles, dimes, and even the occasional 1/2 dollar.

I had to use my lunch money and miss lunch regularly, but I now have a sack of worn out circulated silver coins only worth silver content. I guess most lunches are free for students, I have no idea. I have no idea what the coins are worth now, I have not looked.

First glance I thought it was an Indigenous man.

Now you've done it. My favorite coin! Comes in $2.50 and $5 versions.

I have long said the mint needs to make a $2.50 coin, and make it not much different than the Susan B Anthony dollar that virtually no one anywhere uses.

When was the last time you even saw a dollar coin?

my favorite gold coin is the 10$ indian eagle, there is one in my house somewhere but I don't get to open it until my birthday per my wife

favorite silver is definitely the walking liberty half, maybe all time favorite coin. Inspiration for the silver eagle of course.

I have one graded ms 65 which is basically brand new, but they look better to me showing some age and wear with stories hidden

Went and located my massive coin collection stored in a Band-Aids tin .... saw a couple of qtrs from late 40s (well worn) .... Ol' George's rat tail is quite visible and really stands out ;).

I had about 25 dollar coins .... some with Ike (bigger) and then two each of our first six presidents (numbered 1-6), smaller and gold colored, with no date stamp.... hell ... I don't even remember them or where I got 'em .... they may have came outta a change machine .... put in a 5 bill ... get coins. I vaguely rember doing that sometime daze back. A few Anthony $s ...

What I found most amazing ..... 70 Band-Aids for .98 .... Made In USA ..... the tin.

I used up the Band-Aids ... I reckon :D

Quarters have had different back ends for many years. I think most of the rest of the coins have all been replaced with new versions on at least one side. The old GW had a good run. At least he died doing what he loved.
