Not the same issue but every time I get into a car with auto trans I practically put my left foot thru the floor before turning the key. :D

MANY years ago headed to prom in my Jr year of HS. My car was an old '65 impala with a 4 speed. My g/f had a much newer Nissan pulsar. It was super slow and an automatic. We drove it to prom with me driving. Driving through traffic going from dinner to prom, I wanted to go faster so I pressed the clutch to the floor except that instead of the clutch it was the brake pedal that I stomped. Fortunately we had only just pulled away from a light and were probably only going 15-25 m.p.h.

^it is amazing to me how much the clutch leg gets stronger than the gas/brake leg, so that when one does apply the 'left' clutch leg to the 'right' brake leg pedal, such an abundance of force is on hand, one flies through a windshield.

I watch those fancy rallye videos with the left leg braking and the right on the gas, and try it in my car, being darn careful of how powerful the clutch leg is.

No, it is not only you. Muscle memory is a real thing.

After years of driving Saabs, I still first aim my key at the center console. I actually considered (briefly) relocating my 911 ignition there.

I never try to put the ignition key in the steering column of my Saab, but I regularly hold the key in the wrong hand in my 911.

As for muscle memory, I've had my SE-R for 30 years and the little movement to extend my ring finger to push the ignition release button when I turn the key to take it out has been automatic for almost all of those 30 years.
