How bad does this body damage scare you? ?
 

Im thinking about playing the co part game. I really want a 997 daily driver ( ie, does not have to be perfect/concourse ) , but Id do a 996 also . Life is to short to daily drive Acuras and pick up trucks
This one just popped up right in Pittsburgh .
Im not a body man, but a pretty crafty guy. No frame machine, but have large trees, a backhoe, and lots of chain, and a college try attitude . I have pulled some minor stuff like this out before .
Im guessing the rear structure is pushed in less than an inch, and this would be a mostly cosmetic repair ?. Some minor metal straightening, bumper inner structure, cover, taillight and paint .
Im betting If I can get the taillight to fit, I can probably make the rear look alright without even pulling metal . Looks like the trunk and latch panel are roughly where they should be

I would never even consider that car unless someone with more knowledge can say the frame is not hosed. Bodywork, paint, trim, all easy. Hit in the back 911 I would also want an assessment of the engine, just for clarity.

Here is what the inner structure ( from a not damaged car ) looks like with the bumper removed.
Im not even remotely worried about engine damage or suspension pick up points being moved .
Best part is, I can go there and look in person . Much less of a gamble . 911 wrecks do not turn up all that much in this area .

Correct way to repair and the pull it out and call it good method. You prolly know to look for ripples in the sheet metal and gaps.


I was bidding on a couple caymans on iaai and they kept not letting the sale go through. Gave up on the insurance auctions after that.

I have bought a few cars from Copart and that one is an easy fix...! I wouldnt think twice about buying that if you get a good price on it, but the parts houses know what these cars (for parts) are worth. Expect it to go for full price once the bidding opens..

I'm sure someone with a Celette could pull that out and return it to spec. Perhaps they'll do you a professional courtesy since you're in the biz. But I'd think that car would have to be so cheap, you couldn't refuse in order for it to all pencil out.

Quarter panel looks buckled here. This is typical of 911 rear collision damage.

Would require some pulling to make it right.

Overall doesn’t seem too bad… always some hidden stuff though.

Where are you going to compromise?

Are you changing the quarter panel to make it perfect?

Are you leaving the wrinkles in the inner structure?

Is good enough the car is aligned and square good enough?

I've driven several 911s over the years that were just pulled. And they were good enough to enjoy and rack up miles

To me it's all about the purchase price . If it's low enough for you then go for it . You just have to leave room in the budget for the repairs . We all believe you have the skill set to make the repairs .

You already know resale value will be diminished because of salvage title . If that's not a concern just another reason to move forward . I am sure you can find a used bumper cover and support structure . Byron can hook you up with tail lights .

The unknown is of course " hidden damage " . But it being local you can look it over and get a best guess on if it's worth it to you or not . Good luck and keep us in the loop .

Door gap looks tight at the top. Not sure how hard that will be to correct.

Rear bumper facia is under $1,000 not counting shipping used. There's a scuffed one in Milesburg PA for $400 for a 2006. Looks close to you. You can paint. Car-part.com

I would not be afraid to take it to a straightener. They are not that expensive. I was waiting for many thousands for a quote and two separate qoutes came back, $750 and $1,000.
