Self Preservation Moral Dilemma

Was going to post this in the missing sub thread but think it may expand so deserves it's own thread.

The hypothetical no one is asking.

You are on this thing with 4 other people.

It has a 90 hour air supply for 5 people.

You know the basic logistics of a rescue operation and can guesstimate how much time it will take.

At some point you would have XX hours of air left but the likelihood of being recovered if located at that point means you run out of air before they get you out.

At what point do you start taking a hammer to the other 4 while they are sleeping to conserve air for yourself?

Or do you?

Discuss.

That's pretty dark, but I see where you're coming from.

I'd like to think I'd never put myself or find myself in such a situation as that.

Edit: Let's wait and see if this thread gets Parf'ed first, Paul. No worries, btw.

I hope not, very interesting question.

How much of the remaining air will be used up when you beat the others to death? Surely it will take some exertion, elevated heart rate, and a lot of deep breaths.

But I like where you are going with this.

This.
All you'd really be doing is giving yourself a different death sentence.

I'd rather die morally intact.

Exactly. And you don't know when/if you're going to be rescued. I don't think I'd go that route.

It's not right morally or lawfully. I don't know if or how well I'd be able to live with myself.

But, I can't really say for sure. I've never been in that situation, and I don't think I can say what I'd do in that situation without first having been in and come out of the situation.

Who would have jurisdiction?

I don't think there is any case law for this.

Okay...a suspicion confirmed. Will say nothing more since Paul wants this to stay out of PARF and I think I see why.

Considering their deaths would be due to asphyxiation, would it be possible to somehow choke somebody out with there being findings on autopsy that cause reasonable doubt?

This.

Assuming I'm the oldest of the old-farts aboard, I'd actually go the other way and try to off myself for the good of the rest.

Without ever being in a situation like that, I would like to think I would go with dignity. No way I could live with myself.

This is like the classic philosophical problem involving a lifeboat and more survivors than the boat can handle.

Then there was the short story about drawing straws to determine who should perish first.

This moral dilemma is the one and only reason I would never, ever choose to be encapsulated in the first place.

Well, not the only reason.
