Goodbye Gracie Mae
Our Golden Retriever Gracie peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. She had been with us for about eight years. Gracie was a loveable, floppy goofball of a dog who loved her leisure. Her favorite activity was inactivity – and shedding. Vicki says we could have knitted a dozen Golden puppies from the fur she left around the house.
Gracie came to us as a castoff. A neighborhood family got wind that we were “dog people” and showed up with her. “Our little girl passed away. This was her dog. Want her?” We didn’t get any records, don’t know how old she was, and weren’t told her original name. Vicki declared her name henceforth would be “Gracie Mae” and that was that. I never bonded closely with Gracie. She just wasn’t that kind of dog. But we never raised a hand to her, she got the best of care, and we gave her years of love and the kind of quiet, peaceful life she preferred. The passing of a family member is always a sad occasion, but it was her time, and we were prepared. Goodbye Gracie, we love you. ![]() ![]() Doing what she does best. Lying down. ![]() Gracie loved to play dress-up. ![]() Gracie was the only one of our dogs who liked the pool, and she loved it!

All Goldens should be so lucky to have owners like you guys. She looks happy and contented with her life.
Goodnight, Gracie.

My brother and I had a plan decades ago to give our parents a Golden. Jesus from the litter approached us first, so we took her. A dark colored one like in your first photo, and my mom named her Kelly. Our clever plan was to breed Kelly and recoup our investment with a Golden pup. After her first heat, that plan was nixed by my mom.
My mom always fed her and in her later years used to scramble eggs for her. She almost seemed like she could understand English. They will always be missed and never forgotten.

So sorry for your loss. The title caught my eye. Our Golden/Beagle/a bunch of other stuff mutt is named Gracie. She is also a professional layer arounder. RIP to your Gracie.

Man, you've lost more dogs this year than I've owned. I didn't want to say owned but I didn't have word. Sorry for the pain.
At our age we've decided when the old cat we took in goes, that's the end. It will be empty but for the best. Maybe. |

Thank you all for your condolences. Losing her wasn't a big shock or a big blow to us. She came to us needing a home and it eases the loss knowing that we gave her a good one. Someday we'll all be together on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. For now she's up there frolicking with with KC and Tilly and all the other Pelican dogs that we've eulogized here - and that makes me smile.
