Sully - the movie
Umm, this evening didn't go well.
My wife watched the movie "Sully" on Netflx or something and wanted me to watch too because it was so good. She said it had her in tears. We watched it together, and it was awful - carefully crafted to go in your eyes and ears, right past any intellectual center, and straight to the emotions. She was totally into the movie nearly in tears and I was sitting there skeptical about everything in it. Then, Capt Sully called his wife and told her to turn on the TV. She answered, "Sully, what is it?" Vicki was watching nearly in tears I was cracking up laughing, also nearly in tears. "What the hell is the matter with you?" Through tears of laughter I managed to say, "Sully should tell her it's the big rectangular thing on the TV room wall." So, yeah. The rest of the evening didn't go well. |
It was a decent movie, though not entirely based in reality.

It was entertaining. Manufactured drama of course so that there's a "bad guy".

Apparently there is an investigation and court case for every airplane crash, commercial or private. Guy on my street who used to be a federal judge (and decorated military pilot) did that for a while. Good movie but I too thought they way they were second guessing him was a little overdone.

Entertaining mainly because of Tom Hanks.

Moral...don't travel with Tom Hanks.

I have done two accident investigations of military aircraft where all on board, in each case, died. One was a clear case, after a month of investigation, of pilot error. The second was a mechanical failure with wide ranging legal implications for the prime and sub contractors. It gets ugly early. Lawyers parachute in. And, btw, I don't blame them. Sully did what I find, as a former pilot, fascinating: He and his crew took a very hard problems and survived with all onboard seeing the next sunrise. I have had two significant emergencies in my flying career and I have nothing but respect for the outcome of Sully's flight...movies are movies, no one died in the making of or the real thing. That is astounding. |
I haven't seen it, but I've been curious. It got a lot of hype and, I thought, was supposed to be pretty good. But then what Tom Hanks movies aren't at least pretty good?

The event itself was so significant and such an outstanding bit of flying and problem solving under extreme pressure that it deserves a wide spread retelling.
But it's hard to make a full length movie out of a 6 minute flight. |
I liked Sully but I doubt I'd ever go out of my way to watch it again.
One movie that in my opinion is truly underrated: "The Next Three Days" My GF at the time of release wanted to see it so I tagged along behind her (). And boy did it surprise me. IMO one of Crowe's best movies. It's right up there with Gladiator!

I like Tom Hanks, but the movie wasn’t that great.

One of my favorites: "We've got to get this man to a hospital!" "What is it doctor?" "It's a big building with lots of patients." |
