Picky critters...

I just spent the better part of last week at my wife's family farm. It is a gorgeous acreage on the South Santiam river in Sweethome, OR. It was a great time.

But, when I arrived, a cousin was using the facilities and I stashed a bunch of food on a table unprotected from critters for the day as my son and I drifted the river and failed to catch anything.

When we returned, I noticed that a critter had gotten into our food. This was full daylight and interesting as we always have food left in areas that are vulnerable and really have never had anything eaten in the past.

But what is really interesting is what they ate: 1 full loaf of whole wheat bread; 1 full bag of whole wheat English muffins; 1 whole nectarine; 1/2 apple. And, what was tasted and not taken was a loaf of white bread and a bag of everything bagels.

The critter had a significant preference for whole wheat. Amazing. Sort of makes me laugh. No idea what sort of critter this was but a squirrel is pretty high on the list.

Thought it might entertain some of you as well.

I want to see a squirrel that just ate a whole loaf of bread plus some. These critters are famous for hauling off stuff.

I'm betting it was a squirrel gang. They are known to be ruthless, dangerous, and amoral. :D

I was staying in a campground out of Coos Bay (Sunset Bay) and watched about five crows empty three grocery bags in about fifteen minutes. The family just set the grocery bags on the picnic table and took off for a beach walk. I saw a entire bag of dorritoes fly up into a tree along with a whole pack of hot dogs, the rest they worked over on the bench. Could have I stopped the raid? Probably. I thought it more fitting to watch the town folk learn a lesson. -WW

ps. As a child I had two chipmunks tear a ice-cream cone out of my hands and run off with it at Crater Lake. I myself also learned that lesson.

If you are local who goes to that spot frequently you made the correct choice.

Crows can recognize individual human faces and the imprint is stronger when they've had a bad experience.

It's proven they hold grudges and the ****ers actually pass on that info to other crows.

They're not likely to attack you, they are not that aggressive, but you are better off having them like you or at least have a neutral feeling towards you.

Black Bears are my pesty animal, always getting into a garbage can or two.

I do think squirrels or similar. There was 1/2 an apple with little teeth marks. Don’t think a crow would look like that.

We do have a lot of turkeys around so…
