Heidi and Franny, killin' it again...

Don't know if you all follow Heidi and Franny on Youtube; somehow by the grace of God I stumbled into their awesomeness and am now hooked for life. These gals own a 356 AND Magnum PI's Ferrari, for Pete's sake!!

Anyway, they just posted a new video about fixing bad cold startup idle on a 3.2 Carrera. I found it interesting and informative, hope you do too.

Cheers,
Frank

This is a fantastic video! I do like how thorough and straightforward everything is. Very easy to understand for people who aren't well versed in cars as well. Thank you for sharing!

Hi..i have to say nice presentation..and it look these girls have nice set of toys in their garage..;-)

I would just add to this, the alternator belt should be adjusted(too loose) and the car seems to be 1987 not 1986;-)

other then this very cool ..keep it on girls

Nice girls (they're younger than I am so, yes, they're girls). We've parked next to each other more than once at the now-disbanded (or at least moved to a crappier location) C&C in Lafayette, CO.

This seems to be the exact problem I am having on my 1987 930 Turbo. When started cold, the car many times will idle roughly and even stall (especially this summer when it was hot). When the car is warmed up (even just for a few minutes) it runs fine holding a steady 900 rpm idle. We have replaced the WUR, fuel accumulator, and other parts that we thought might have been causing the problem to no avail (I know, we should have done a much better job of troubleshooting than just throwing new parts in the car - I'm going to send this video to my indie who works on the car!). I will take out that "idle-speed adjuster" (what it is called in the 1987 PET) and inspect and clean it up (the car has 119K miles so I would expect that it might either be dirty or just plain worn out). Thanx for posting about the video!

Unless the title is wrong, it's an 1986. Someone had put an aftermarket turbo tail on the car, and so we searched high and low until we found a 1986 tail for the car. It was for a coupe and not a cab, so maybe that's what threw you off? The car is mostly original, but not completely. It was a fixer-upper for sure. Also, most alternator bearings will go bad with too tight of an alternator belt. We have consulted with the experts on this one. It's just as it should be. Thanks for your concern about it and I am glad you enjoyed the video. Heidi

Love their channel, it’s so cool so see women’s perspective!

When do the braces come off though?

Anyone else think Franny has a huge Adam’s apple?

I think they all do it if its been sitting for a long time. Mine runs rough for the first couple seconds then settles to a nice fast idle when it sits for a few months.

The vacuum leak would cause uneven idle with closed loop, so the problem would surface once the engine is hot. Quick way to check that is to open the oil fill cap and see if idle drops, then returns to normal (lean stop test). Other check is to pinch off the fuel return hose (rich stop test). Quick test of ICV is to remove it, then plug back in after engine is warm. The ICV would be roughly at 50%. Baseline CO mixture is checked with a test pipe and wideband O2 sensor. Disconnect the O2 sensor and let it run in open loop. Set to 1.4 lambda. Check with O2 sensor (closed loop), and the '86 should oscillate between .98 and 1.2 lambda.

But I'm splitting hairs. I think cleaning the ICV probably helped. The problem was that before the O2 sensor heats up, the DME was running the open loop map, using only the AFM, speed and reference sensor inputs, and relying on the ICV. Vacuum leak would = hard starting and a slow idle until the O2 sensor heats up, which takes about 45 seconds with a 3-wire heated O2 sensor such as on the 3.2 Carrera.
