Oppenheimer

Absolutely brilliant movie in every aspect from story to cast and acting to cinematography, etc. Saw it in 70mm IMAX, easily best way to go if you can find it close.

I knew you would come through, Shaun.

I have been talking to other movie geeks and they say Detroit is how far I have to go to get to the big IMAX screen. From AKron, ugh. The IMAX in Bay Village (west Cleveland) might suffice.

Ive been asking all my lady pals to go see Oppenheimer with me. I get the look like when I ask tham about the James Webb Space Telescope.

The physics of the bomb is fascinating.

What are the chances that a redundant thread with the exact same title is right under the original?

Never seen that. I changed that by posting to the redundant one. Shouldn't have.

IRRC the first bombs were remarkably/relatively inefficient at converting mass into energy. Yet...

The Trinity detonation scene was just incredible! Silence at detonation, long pause then a massive BOOM & blast that rippled on and on. They depicted the detonation from three observation positions and the BOOM diminished as they got further away. It's details like this that make a movie great for me.

The sex scenes were symbolic and they were tastefully done. Did they add anything of value to the movie? Nope.

Nope...

EDIT: Florence Pugh portrayed "Jean Tatlock".

Think borderline chubby Communist with sexual identity issues.

You'll enjoy it. As I wrote early the Trinity test scene was just incredible.

- IMO it's the best depiction of a nuclear detonation ever portrayed in movie! BOOM!

Freshman Fall more than 40 ago:

Three classes...

Calculus

English 5 (massive focus on Paradise Lost-- see, e.g., reference in Animal House)

First engineering class: seminar on the history of the atomic bomb. Not just the science (physics)... all of it.

The latter two were somehow tied together that Fall.

At the time our College pres was an alumn of the Project.

The impact of that class still resonates.

Of course freshman Spring TMI happened and that same College pres took time off to run the president's investigation.

We are now poised on a different precipice.

I am tempted to see this new film... but also have trepidation.

Thanks for that.
I think you will love this movie Bob but it's not worth a 3 hour drive for 70 IMAX. A standard IMAX experience would be fine I'm sure. That said, Dunkirk in 70 would have been worth a 3 hour drive for 70. That movie was breathtaking in 70 and I think I saw it 3-5 times just for the experience. Oppenheimer on regular IMAX would be just fine IMHO.

As a biopic the movie is about the man and to some degree his relationships with the women around him as much as about the Manhattan Project. They would enjoy it too.

End of September/early October, I'll be interested in your thoughts on The Creator, my latest movie obsession. I hope it will be as deep and epic as I suspect.

When I went to Nuc Power School outside of Saratoga Springs NY, the old couple that owned the huge house that had been made into several apartments, both had worked on the atomic bomb development in New Mexico. The old fellow was a physics/math type who would meet with Oppenheimer all the time and said he was very hard to work with. The old wife was a secretary and she had it pretty easy just typing reports and letters and such. Funny thing though was the old fellow was super smart with theoretical physics but didn't know which end of a screwdriver to hold! I fixed the huge old boiler the house had so we wouldn't freeze in the winter and he was amazed that a youngster like me could do something like that while he was explaining the theory of heating water to make steam and such. Interesting couple and I am glad I got to know them.

my take from the movie, indeed the thrust of it, is the man behind the team and the physics is even more so. I think that's why what should have been a late fall limited release pic is on its way toward being a summer blockbuster.

We are assembling a car load of fools for the trip to Detroit.

Need to see the bomb go off full Bohr as discussed.

Very impressed! You won't be disappointed. 100 points awarded for full Bohr.

I'm off for a date with Margot Robbie in a bit.

Weekend box office sales:

Oppenheimer: $94 million

Barbie: $155 million

Both are waaaaaay past their expectations. Makes my heart glad.

You have a real good time, Shaun. I'll just be working on this Chevy Trax cooling system.
