Outdoor Kitchen Build List

Need help from the PPOT brain trust. In the process of building a 9' (grill side) by 14' outdoor kitchen.

What should I do differently? Safety concerns? The kitchen is covered and built out of steel and concrete boards.

  • Appliances and storage
  • Grill: Napoleon Prestige PRO 500 Built-in Natural Gas Grill - rear burner and Rotisserie kit $1,994
  • 2 burner side burner: open to recommendations
  • 2 Drawer storage: BBQGuys Signature 16-Inch Stainless Steel Double Access Drawer- Contempo - $433
  • Access doors: BBQGuys Signature 32-Inch Stainless Steel Double Access Door - $284
  • 3 Drawer storage: BBQGuys Signature 16-Inch Stainless Steel Triple Access Drawer - Contempo - $509
  • Fridge: Thinking cheap that is able to be changed out every couple of years. Live in Houston so worried it will die even if pricey.

Sink:

Things of note:
  • slightly less premium grill to maximize other items
  • 3 drawers will be a better quality than 2 drawers since a high-touch item
  • Masonry vs flush mount? The kitchen will be stone veneer to match the pool wall.

Shelter from sun, misters and/or ceiling fans

It will take a beating out there, get all standard sized stuff for ease of replacement

Set it up to drain so it will be easy to clean

You don't need all that storage.

You will use it far less than you think you will.

It will constantly be filthy in there, dust / dirt, critters.

Sink, grill, fridge. Ice chest is a + but not critical. I've found a regular cooler keeps the ice longer.

Cabinet under grill and sink. The rest is just a pain.

I had a regular $200.00 mini fridge in my space for 12 years, worked fine. Replaced it because my wife wanted a new one with more modern controls and a glass front.

That is a large setup! Are you planning on big parties (kids sports, friends, family, neighbors) on a frequent basis? I think the previous replies are dead on correct. 15 years ago I built a custom outdoor BBQ and entertainment area. We used it alot (kids sports events) the first few years and then it became a backdrop to the backyard.

All your storage spots will be filled with critters inside 6 months for sure. I thought I wanted an outdoor mini fridge but soon realized it was never really used. If I could do it over again I would have added a deep sink with a divider - excellent to fill one side with ice and some drinks. Since my top was poured in place I would have the sink poured concrete as well.

Shade is always top priority so make you you plan well for how the sun crosses your property. Wind is also important to consider. At our place we got consistent wind from the ocean even though we were inland 8 miles. I made sure my BBQ was placed so that smoke was not blown on the guests.

I elected to skip a sink cause the house was 20' away and already setup for dishes and cleaning. I did NOT want to do them at the island.

Good luck!

Sinks don't always go in corners. Removes a lot of usable space. Big countertops are good for buffet. I don't have enough.

If I were to ever build such a set up it would have to have a brick oven. IDC how it's fired.

I have the same BBQ in a portable. You need the searing side burner. Best steak ever!

OK, your sketch shows only one girl and she's on the phone! You need to get rid of that design flaw and sketch in about 5 more girls in bikinis without phones and get rid of that dude.

Big as fan ceiling fan and then oscillating fans on both beams pointing at the bar top. Will have a lot of air moving. Sink/gutters will die into french drain.

I am going back and forth on the storage. I have a ton of ****e that I cook with and it would be nice to get it out of the main kitchen. I grill almost every dinner outside and hate going back and forth. The ice chest sounds nice, but yea I have a cooler that is probably better.

No kids, but very social DINK's (not swingers lol). Of all things, I prioritized the sink as #1. I wash my hands constantly. I did get a good recommendation to spray foam the area around the sink when installed to give it more insulation for when I ultimately fill it with ice.

Massive covered structure of 20x14' so direct sun is taken care of. We will be getting sun shades to take care of the pesky low-angle stuff and help with privacy.

Was dumb to put the sink in the corner for the first sketch. Fixed that and putting in a big farmhouse style that can accommodate a cutting board over it like on an RV or boat. Have a ooni pizza oven but brick oven in the future would be a nice DIY.

How do you like the grill??? I have gone back and forth on so many different types. I wish there weren't so many options. I have been researching for the past 6 months. I think I am going to nix the side burner and not have a searing station. I have a dual induction cooktop that is portable that I could on outside already. Put a cast iron skillet and sear my steak after a sous vide bath and I am golden. I'd rather maximize counter space.

The searing station is my favorite part. The BBQ ....not so much. It does everything I ask it to and it is a quality unit. The problem is I had a Vermont Castings for 20 years (and still have it) and it is an amazing BBQ. When the VC heats up it holds it's heat because of the heavy cast and cooks uniformly. The Pro 500 looses it's heat if you leave the lid open. You are then cooking with the flame and not the BBQ. They tell me I am being too picky.

Welcome back, Tom. Glad to see you're still kicking around.

Looks like a hell of a project that will provide lots of good times once it's done.

Just a thought, make sure that whatever direction is west has a deep overhang and you don't have to face west. Having to stand at a grill facing into the afternoon/evening sun would SUCK!

I missed this bit, that should cover the afternoon/evening sun.

don't forget to plan for good smoke relieving venting on your roof style.

We just took a left turn and did not build similar. We simply bought nice patio furniture and did other projects. But, we did get nice covers so that the dirt/ tree stuff stays off when not in use. I would recommend planning for dirt avoidance as part of your plan.

Outdoor ice machine? They are the most inefficient appliance on the planet, but so nice to have if you frequently entertain/make cocktails, etc. I have 2!
Sketch looks great btw, good luck w/ the build!
