the really old generation. old.
wow. I just got surprised.
some history first. I live next to an old lady. she is living solo and independently. I bring her 2-3 meals a week. I actually went to a restaurant supply house and bought a stack of those black-clear lid to-go containers, since the old lady never returns my plates or bowls. she is nice enough, and sometimes fairly bothersome with her request. she has me on speed-dial with all her home issues. whatever. I am decent with a pair of channel-lock pliers. a few weeks ago, she called me and said, "I dont feel well!" my wife and I went over (we have a key to her house) and made entry. we found her having a friggen heartattack!! we called 911, and took care of everything. prescription meds list, called her family, etc. well, when she came home we had the place cleaned up and stuff. she uses NON SCOOPABLE cat litter and that stuff is EVIL!! I used our litter and cleaned up her horror story. wow. anyways she gives me a knit hat she made. a beanie to give to my wife. she is a master knitter. she said to me today. "hey, dont you owe me $25 for the knit hat?" hahahahaha.. I'll give it to her today. she caught me off guard and kinda lectured me for making her have to ask. to bad she doenst take VENMO. hahaha.. you think she would lose her S, if I give her a bill for my services? she called about 4 days ago to get me to go buy her a loaf of bread. I just handed it to her. oh, well. she is 95..I'm the dumbass...hahah.. at the hospital, she made me and (the HOTTEST) nurse laugh. she said, "well, that was weird, they just shaved my HU-HU". the old lady is a crack up. I dont know when her expiration date is, so I won't sweat the details. but she totally surprised me. I totally assumed the knit hat was a gift.

"Thanks for saving my life. Here's a bill for the hat that I gave you."
She's shrewd and making some walking around money. When you leave she probably says "sucker" and starts counting her millions like Scrooge McDuck. LOL The good news is that you're building karma by the truck load.

You have a big heart Cliff.
My old neighbor lady has Tourette syndrome...and she's feisty...and a drinker...and a smoker. LOL. Kinda glad I moved 70 miles away. I always helped her out though. She was alone. Drove me nuts though.

I too had an older lady neighbor like that. On bottled O2 and could barely walk. I shoveled her property in the winter, checked on her periodically and made sure she was OK in the summer heat. She was not a PITA and I got home baked cookies in return.

At 95 she's just a little scrambled. If she was after 25 bucks from me I just would have had to play along and said that I'm exchanging it for a different one. And brought food.
Or another way would be to say since it's about money, you sold it and didn't get as much as you needed. So her share is short. And then put the food down. You'll know when to quit playing. |

Maybe the cat and the 25 bucks have been willed to you (or your wife) when she crosses over the river Styx.....

She’s doesn’t have any family I’m assuming. You and your wife are what all people should be. 😃

My friends late brother had a neighbour like that. She lived alone and had no family. He would take care of things around her place, shoveling the walk, picking up groceries etc. When she passed away she left him everything including her house.
It's good you're helping her out.

Good man.
I've had several encounters like that. Sounds like you did good. Make the best of it. Make them feel special. Treat them right. A good opportunity to do the right thing. (and if they just shaved her hu-hu- don't take her knit) ![]() ![]() ![]() (well- take it- but, dont sleep with it under your pillow) ![]() Along those lines - I'll share a story- Neighbor across the street's wife died (this 25 years ago). He came over- pale and shaking. He wanted to give me his house. He was a mess, I thanked him for the offer, and told him we should talk when it was a better time. I think I even hugged him. Evidently- he was a mess. He went home and shot himself dead. I "thought" I was doing the right thing by not greedingly taking his house. I didn't realize how thin he was stretched. God- If only I could replay that one moment, I would. Hindsight 20/20. I only share this to shout out- help x 10000000. ask questions later.

Good job, Vash!
My mom is 87, still living independently - I wish her neighbors were as nice as you. Every time I visit I get to listen how she is helping THEM out with something... |

I tell ya Vash, we miss posts like this from you. You know, you are all right after all.
Old people get like that. We will too one day. My old lady neighbor next to my parent's is from the old days. Joe, from NY, his wife Rena is from here. Both Italians. He was a mean old man, they lived through the depression and was a tool and die maker during the war. He has told me to get off his lawn many times. No kidding here. We stayed off his yard. He dies about 30 years ago. Rena lived on for another 20 years. I would go help her with all the house maintenance stuff to putting a new roof on that house through my roofer, making sure no one take advantage of an old lady. Check up on her when there's an earthquake. She shakes like a leave on a tree during a cold windy winter night when that happens. Rena was in her late 80 or maybe early 90s, came to me as I was walking toward my parents with one of my workmen one day. She shouts: "Jeff, Jeff, I have a new gardener". Me: (My generic reply was) He must be good and responsible. Rena: He's Mexican. But he's the good kind of Mexican. I can tell. I almost die laughing but held it in. As soon as I got pass my parent's driveway, I turned and asked David, are you one of those good or bad Mexicans? Old people, that's how they are. Last edited by look 171; 08-02-2023 at 08:39 PM.. |

My grandma probably would have said, "Thank you, Vash." Then proceed to put a silver half dollar in his hand.

1. Vash is a mensch. Nicely done.
2. I have the same-ish neighbor lady. Going to a pie party at her house in a week. Lady can absolutely make an amazing pie. In fact, her family owned a chain of pie shops in town that were somewhat iconic. These folks certainly beat the crazy, mean, abusive, and generally nasty neighbor alternative. I have had them as well. Enjoy the hat. |
