Anybody successfully growing tomatoes this year?
I've been growing tomatoes for 50 years and I have never, ever had a year like this.
For months the weather has been fluctuating between too hot or too cool for pollination to take place. The "4th Of July" variety that normally starts producing in late June has a few golf ball sized green tomatoes on it now, July 24th. We normally have tomatoes from late June to October, but this year we will be lucky if we have any by August. The San Marzanos have a few, tiny fruits. The only variety that is likely to produce by August is the "Mortgage Lifter." I've never seen anything like it.

Have you been getting decent rainfall in July?
Nothing was growing well here until a couple weeks ago. We had over 6 inches of rain in July, but hardly any in June.

Too cold and wet in April, May and June. Too bad my master gardner lady died. She would have warned me about that in January

Mine got off to a very slow start. The cherry tomatoes are finally ripening but the Beefsteaks and Plums are still struggling.
Last year was the worst for me as I got NO tomatoes at all. So, this year is better. IDT my apple tree is long for this world. Last year it dropped all of the fruit. This year it has dropped about half of the fruit so far. It was covered in flowers but now it's down to about two dozen apples.

I planted a 5-6" Mulberry tree this spring. Watered it regularly and it just wouldn't start growing.
When the rains finally came in July...the thing has grown to twice the size. I have no vegetable garden. Nothing beats a natural rainfall.

I only have a few plants. Just some small green fruit so far - nothing appears to be maturing.

I skipped out. Tired of the mess and four bags of tomatoes in a week. I have 2wice as many grapes and they aren't very good. Should have thinned them.

My tomatoes, both cherry and beefsteak are just coming around. I picked 15 cherry tomatoes last week that were ripe. They were delicious. Apple tree has more than double what it had last year. Last year my apple tree shed most apples to survive. Thank goodness it looks like this year will be great
Cherry trees served up a bumper crop, as did raspberries. The freezers are full of goodness !

Our plants have taken off! Huge, but all the fruit is small and green still. Very late this year.

Same here. The plants are 5 and 6 feet tall. Almost no fruit.

Interesting thread, my tomatoes have been awful this year! Usually by now I’m swimming in tomatoes, I have not had one ripe one yet! The plants are way small and just not thriving. I was wondering if all of the smoke caused issues with bees (have seen a number of dead bees and young birds around the yard this year, very abnormal).

No luck here. I normally plant seeds, early April and pick cherry tomatoes around the end of June. This year the seeds did not come up. Every few days I planted a few seeds and they just did not come up so I finally bought a small plant. It has a dozen or so tomatoes and they are full size but green. Maybe in December I can pick some.
On the other hand my 2 cucumber plants that I started from seeds are doing great.

I had a fantastic season but it is over now. Way too hot but April May and most of June were ideal. Made the last BLT of the season yesterday watching the Indy race.

Ours here in the PNW have been slower to produce tomatoes, but we are seeing lots growing now just slow to ripen. Same with our cucumbers. But it has been hot and dry. This despite our watering efforts. We got our first rain in 4 weeks today, and should get a bit tomorrow. Will see what happens by the weekend.
Cheers

Mine are still flowering?! But I did get some raspberries I planted last year Lettuce, peas are both tiny/not growing and they usually grow like crazy. Carrots and cucumbers are coming in great. Strange El Niņo year…

I wish.
It's too windy where I live. I love tomatoes. Especially those more oval shaped Italian ones. Not acidy. I grew them alot as a kid. |
