rodents ate wiring?
Just picked up the 550 from the BMW dealership. The car has been awesome since I bought it a year ago. But, had some bad luck. My AC quit working so, off to the dealership. They found rodents had been chewing on wiring. It was $220 in parts and $1400 labor; an all day repair. The steering rack had to be removed for access.
Service advisor heard that mint Keeps the rodents away. Wondering where to buy the spray and if I need to spray directly on the wires. Last edited by gduke2010; 08-04-2023 at 08:02 PM.. |

All sorts of stuff works (moth balls, etc), but it ain't fire and forget.... you'll need to refresh whatever you put there/apply/spray every so often

Just had this issue on my 2021 Tacoma. Started up, immediately had engine lights, ran code reader, knock sensor failure....
Had it towed in, rodents chewed wiring under intake...$30 part, $800 labor plus tow. Insurance picked up all but $400 deducible. Never had this issue on 25 different vehicles, insurance agent says they see it frequently. |

Lost the wiring harness on a chevy Avalanche, transmission harness on a Ford 350, and a chewed up fuel line on a gmc pickup.

I've been told many times that moth balls work but had one guy say he found moth balls in the nest!
Death is the only answer. I put the old fashion spring traps at both sides of the garage door and monitor them constantly. I also put glue boards with cheese in the center in a few spots along the walls. I figure mickey will look at these things before he gets board and starts chewing. It has worked well for me. I would use poison but have heard of mickey eating and going someplace to die and smell up the garage for a month. I do use poison in an unattached shed that is away from the house. I don't like the idea of other animals eating the poisoned rodent but refuse to let them destroy my stuff.

In the pole barn at the ranch the Eastern Woodrats , a native species, are driving me nuts. They chew up anything and everything including tractor wiring, fuel lines, air compressor hoses, welder cables, Romex building wiring, you name it. My nephew's nine year old daughter was concerned that they would all starve to death trapped inside the barn so I set live traps. Catch and release a long way down the road.

I know a gal with a brand new gm that had the wiring eaten after a lengthy visit at the dealership. 2 grand for a new wiring harness. Pretty sure they use soy sheath bc my older cars never had a problem.
I recommend this stuff. I put it in all of my cars(around the battery) and camper. It kills very well. Very very well. ![]()

It's a big problem where I live. The newer cars use soy based wiring harnesses and rodents love it. My wife's Tesla has gotten hit twice 2500 bucks each time. Luckily covered by the insurance. The second time we gave the service center some special covering to wrap the harness with. So far so good. My Volvo parks right next to it and although I see signs of rodents in the engine bay, they don't seem to be interested in the wiring.
They also chewed thru the air lines on my motorhome. Big PITA.
