What to do about stalled MC registration

When I purchased my new to me trike I paid the out of state dealer to manage the transfer and registration in NJ. They haven't been able to get it done in a timely manner and now my temp tag has expired and I can't ride. :(

They aren't stone walling me and have been responsive to my calls but still I'm stuck. It may not be their fault. It could be NJDMV .

So, what to do? Do I say fug it refund my fees and try to do it myself? Might that cause even further delays? I've been patient but I'm getting annoyed.

sigh.

I don’t think you have the same situation from reading, but I bought a ratty old truck a few weeks back. No plates. I sent in the paperwork and took pictures as evidence. I will drive it and show LE that I am solid if needed. Sounds like your bottleneck is out of state?

If you are 100% compliant and can prove it, you might just ride it.

An opinion.

You can purchase a temporary tag.

I registered and tagged my car at the Newton Office. I was in and out in 15 minutes.

I would get a refund and do it myself.

I spoke to NJDMV and they said that I can do that but since it's in progress it may goober things up but I'm seriously considering that. I'm giving the dealer one more day then I'm doing it myself.

If they can't get it done by now, something or someone's in the way. Do you have clear title in your name?

I may be on my own here but Covid really improved the service at the DMV. The appointment system thins the herd.

The Newton office was already head and shoulders above others, likely due to being out in the boondocks. It’s twice the drive for me as two others but it’s well worth it.

I had my car smogged and got my new tags at AAA all in under an hour yesterday.

No brag, just fact.

I thought it was just me. Yeah noticed that too. The only complaint I have is that they separated the license and vehicle offices. That can be a PITA at times.

I did have an issue recently. I renewed my reg online, paid it and all. Never received it. The $ was taken out of my account. I went to the local office and told them. The clerk was like" yeah that happens all the time. It' some goes to some bogus payment page. Just pay again and file for a refund".

I was like WTF?? Don't you guys think that should be fixed??

..

.

What will happen if you ride without it?
I remember in high school we all drove bikes and I was the only one with a license. They just paid the $15 fine if they got pulled over.

That's all you need my man - clear title, a little cash, and an in-person trip down to your local DMV:)

Saving me one trip to the DMV is enough to make AAA worth it

What’s on the back of the bike now? If NJ won’t give you a temp tag, maybe just ride it. Ditch cops if necessary.

Dollars to donuts, it's not in process unless you have actual proof the dealer has done anything. I would just do it myself.

AAA: absolutely. That said, MA Registry, at least the one close to me, has been excellent for 20 years. No drama, no long waits, just good service. When Geico put the wrong info on a registration once they let me go home, get a new doc and come back went to a special person, front of the line so to speak. Can't get better than that.

JavaBrewer 08-08-2023 09:36 AM

I don't know how things are done in NJ but CA DMV is to be avoided. I use AAA for everything now and zero complaints. I also concur if you have the title and documentation showing the fee is paid and pending transaction then I would ride the bike.

We're lucky enough to have two cars that get to go to STAR stations when they need smogging. I've found a STAR station that will do it for $40, cert included.
I think I spent more time getting my card out and writing the check at AAA then anything else while there. Both times in the past two months it has been extremely painless. Yes, the cost is nothing compared to pain of DMV visits.

I know, I know, cliche arriving...

With a clear title with your name on it, make an appointment and have a chat with the folks who live this dream every single day.

Good luck!

Rot 911 08-08-2023 04:41 PM

Just contact the dealer you bought the truck from and ask them to send you another temporary tag. I’ve had to do that a couple of times in the past. They should not give you any hassle about it.

Baz 08-08-2023 05:00 PM

Seems like your local tag office could get things straitened out for you.

Take your title with you and some cheddar, like Gambler said.

My tag office here is very good at resolving things.....
