What do you think of this socket set

https://www.griotsgarage.com/usag-100-piece-metric-socket-bit-ratchet-set/

Trying to avoid made in china tools. Presumably this isn’t but other than griots garage, can’t find any info about it

I like that it has a 9 3/4” extension I don’t see with the the ones sold at Lowe’s and HD

At this price, is there another brand I should be considering?

stevej37 08-08-2023 03:31 PM

Price is too high for me.
I see the same sets for about half that...or less.

I don't have another brand to recommend.

masraum 08-08-2023 03:41 PM

I would be tempted to try to find something used with craftsman on FB marketplace or something like that.

otto_kretschmer 08-08-2023 03:43 PM

USAG is an Italian brand.

https://www.usag.it/en/chisiamo/marchio

I never heard of them before today.

ramonesfreak 08-08-2023 03:58 PM

Yea the only info online I could find was a site in Italy …the one you posted

Seems to me,all his products,[Griot's Garage] are premium priced.

DAMNED $pendy if you ask me. You say, "no chinese"...does that include Tiawan in your mind?

If not, this for the 1/4" drive socket set in both metric and SAE

https://www.tekton.com/1-4-inch-drive-6-point-socket-and-ratchet-set-skt05303

And this for your bit set...

https://www.tekton.com/1-4-inch-shank-hex-bit-set-37-piece-dbh93101

In my opinion, Tekton is a decent replacement for the old USA made Craftsman tools as far as quality goes. You might surf the Tekton site a bit...tools shipped in the USA to you...10% credit on your next order, and a simple guarantee...send a pic of the broken tool, they ship a new one.

ramonesfreak 08-08-2023 04:20 PM

I was just going to say I’m liking the the Tekton sets I’m seeing online.

Thanks sir. I’m going with a tekton set

The recent video about the guy that works in the McLaren service center was interesting. He's got a set of "stubby" sockets that are "Capri" brand (Taiwan). I don't know anything about them, but if you can use them on a McLaren...

Went with the 3/8 Inch Drive 6-Point Socket and Ratchet Set, 42-Piece (6-24 mm)

And Tekton site takes PayPal…yes!!!!!

That's one of the nice things about Tekton sets..no size skips. You'll be satisfied with the quality, fit and function. Good tools for the DIYer..

(edit) Warning!!! Tools can become addictive.

A930Rocket 08-08-2023 06:21 PM

While the tool set is neat and organized, in a case, it’s way too much money.

wdfifteen 08-08-2023 06:31 PM

I don't like tool sets that are pre-selected for me. I definitely don't like that Griot set - 1/4 and 1/2" drives but no 3/8? Most of my work is done with 3/8 drive sockets (10mm up to 19). Ten mm is the line between 1/4 and 3/8. I have a 3/8 drive 10mm socket, but for the most part everything from 10m down is 1/4" drive. 19 is the line between 3/8 and half. I have a 19 mm 3/8 drive socket, but I also have one in 1/2 drive and everything from 19 up is 1/2 drive.

Good point by wd. 3/8" drive is the most commonly used for automotive wrenching. Also, in order to advertise more pieces, many of these "complete set" things add lots of 1/4" hex bits while sockets skip sizes. The bits are extremely cheap when purchased seperately.

If you have a tool rollaway, Tekton puts ratchet & socket sets like these. I have a set of 1/2" drive sockets only on these rails. Pretty trick..sockets lock on firmly with a 1/4 twist. Again, no skips.

I never heard of them before today.

All USAG tools and tool kits are manufactured and/or assembled in Italy using Italian and globally sourced components.

If someone offered to sell me that tool set
for $50 I'd say no thanks.

URY914 08-09-2023 04:41 AM

I hate the plastic case they make it look cheap. Presentation is everything.

blucille 08-09-2023 05:52 AM

USAG and face have begun selling the same tools and sets, either/both are great in my experience. I've been buying them when I can and when I have a need for something and I've never been disappointed. That being said, they are a bit expensive. I usually keep my eyes on ebay for some deals.

If you like the rails, the US manufacturer is Ernst. They have a huge selection of organization products. Some are available on Amazon

Yeah, I know...love 'em, but not enough to dump all my old Craftsperson socket spring clip rails...switching would be damned $pendy for all my 1/4-3/8-1/2 drive sockets. All togther maybe 500 sockets? Then toss in that I rarely use them these days. Lots of "If I could do it over, I'd do this instead" connected to my rollaway..:(

The Ernst raiis are definitely the schnizzle!
