Sanity check - Facebook ads

Is anyone else experiencing this?
Starting today, 80% of the Facebook posts I'm seeing are ads, and I'm only seeing arbitrary posts from my friends. Ironically, I don't fit the demographics for the ads.

Chocaholic 08-16-2023 06:01 PM

Yes, it’s become a steady stream of ads.

sc_rufctr 08-16-2023 06:22 PM

Also here... Meta must be losing money or they've crossed some sort of financial threshold.

Meanwhile when I search Google for just about any product an ad for that product soon appears in my Faceplant feed. Google must be feeding info to Faceplant on a massive scale & visa versa. Is there a problem with that? Not if adequate security precautions are in place but all of these companies are for profit and "adequate security" is expensive in 2023.

*Do you remember the customized ads in "Minority report"?
- That's how "John Anderton" (Tom Cruise) found out he had Asian retinas transplanted into his eyes!

(*My head is full of stuff like this... LOL :D)

OMG, that went right over my head when I saw the movie. Thanks for pointing it out.

I notice fecalbook will sometimes go into "ad overdrive" and "suggested groups" mode and completely inundate the news feed with crap. Usually I'll check out of FB, and re sign in several days later. It generally flares up and calms down in spurts to an annoying, but acceptable level- but can resort back to obscene amounts of ads at any time. Almost like a bonus round in an arcade game or something, but not in a good way.

I click on "see less" of reels and short videos every time. For over a year. They still come up.

I need to rewatch. I remember some seedy apartment where he had the procedure and horrid food in the fridge while he recovered.

On topic, Yes, huge percentage of links and ads vs historical feeds.

917_Langheck 08-17-2023 05:56 AM

Foolbook is mining your browser history and any cookie crumbs from your google search. That's why those feeds/ads show up.

WolfeMacleod 08-17-2023 06:35 AM

I'm seeing a lot of video ads for bogus bonerpills on FB that are flat out hardcore porn. Report them, FB does nothing.
I took a screenshot of one, blotted out the sensitive bits, and posted a "WTF?!?"
I got a 30 day suspension....

You ought to see how bad youtube is.

Rot 911 08-17-2023 06:59 AM

I thought it was just me! At least 2/3 of my Facebook feed over the last week has been ads. Does it matter that I report all of them as being irrelevant, as they pop up again even after I report them.

Amazon, Instagram and just about everyone else is doing the same. I was in Milwaukee this weekend and visited their waterfront. I googled the address of the art museum and just as quickly, Wisconsin and Milwaukee ads appeared on FB.

This is not correct. Every site you visit has likely implemented a Facebook pixel to actively SEND data to Meta.

https://www.facebook.com/gpa/blog/the-facebook-pixel

More on the pixel and ways to see if a site has one. At this point anyone selling anything will likely have it and one for google as well.

Because those sites have an fb pixel.

You're welcome Sir (Capt.).

gacook 08-17-2023 08:18 AM

I haven't been on FB for...probably 8 years now. Don't miss it a bit. THIS is my only form of social media. :D

I can see were your coming from but I'd bet Faceplant and Guggle are working together in the back ground to make more money. Because that's what I would do.

Seeing Facebook is sure I'm a power lifting, golf playing, obese, parkinson stricken, vegan that needs crematorium services and a cruise, I think they're doing more guessing than mining.:)

Corporations are people.

So I guess I can attach Air-Tags (GPS transmitters) to my ***** ex-girlfriend's car and clothing to see where she goes at all times. I want to know everything.

And if she meets with friends then I track them too automatically. That's a lot of work. Might hire some people to help out. Make a company. And all expenses are deductible. I make money stalking people.

It's not stalking.

How about her child's bike. While we are at it, that includes other people in society. Her Doctors and Lawyers with their clients. How about let's go all the way to the top. Government officials. No person on the public streets of information is safe from my eyes.

I give my 'best effort' promise not to abuse or sell this information for profit. Not even for a hundred billion dollars a year profit. That implies no guarantees because there are no laws to stop me. Really I can do whatever I want legally as long as it's on the down low.

They don't even know it is occurring. Blissful ignorance. Haven't been caught yet. And when I am, and when that is widely publicized people brush it off as just john70t being john70t. That creep. Oh look he donated money and is doing a cage match fight. He's a regular guy. Let's send him an invitation to our next party, c/c in all our emails, and buy stuff from him again.

Iv'e basically been on FB from its inception. Have always enjoyed it.

Now it's pretty much infuriating to use, with all the ads and irrelevant crap on it.

.

A930Rocket 08-17-2023 06:29 PM

I recently joined using a made-up name to look at FBMP for tools, and car parts. Also, some BMW and Porsche specific groups. I haven’t noticed too many ads though.
