Blaupunkt radio installation

I’ve got an old Blaupunkt Frankfurt that I’d like to put in my BMW E12. I pulled the ugly cheap modern radio that’s in it out to see what I need to do to rewire it (a lot) and mount it. The radi will slide into the existing tray, but it won’t fit flush with the console - there’s another plate behind the faceplate, with a rectangular-section rod on each side (plated) that is just long enough that it won’t fit past the opening. This seems as if it were meant to retain the radio behind a mounting surface, but it’s fixed. As far as I can see I can just remove the knobs and faceplate and remove this plate and reinstall the knobs and faceplate, but what is this plate for?

You if you remove that spacer plate, you might end up with exposed knob shafts because of the new space between the faceplate and the back of the knobs.

Should be very straightforward. Remove the pieces like layers, see what's going on. It's not magic elves that assembled it. All is soldered, very mechanical, very simple.

I figured it out this morning - I didn’t see that what looked like studs in the bars were set screws (There was debris in the screw heads). Back out set screws, remove bars, slide radio into console opening, re-insert bars and tighten set screws, and it’s perfect. Now wait for the correct Bluetooth module to arrive and figure out how to cleanly cut out the wiring for the modern radio, and I’ll have it in next weekend.
