Opinions on an old truck for sale?
Talk me out of this? I’m thinking of getting a little pop up camper and a truck. Fishing/ hiking/ camping/ skiing and similar.
https://salem.craigslist.org/cto/d/salem-2001-ford-f350-super-duty-xl-73l/7642226825.html Color is sort of strong. I really want a crew cab. But wow. That looks clean! |

Do you really want a diesel?
It looks like its one of the later 2 valve power strokes so that is good. I would stay away from any of the 4 valve engines. |

School bus Yellow.
I feel like that thing started life, or was supposed to start life, as a municipal vehicle. It does look super clean.

I'd keep looking for a crew cab in a less insane color. I'd always have regrets with something like that.

Safety yellow. On the plus side, who would ever steal it?

Grill looks like the incorrect one as well. I picked up cabs 7.3 for a 3/4 of the price and had it for 6 years now (albeit needing a zf6 swap atm). The 7.3 is a great engine. good fuel mileage ect. Can't go wrong.

You won't see yourself coming down the road. Seems like a decent deal, looks clean in the pictures. Get out there and drive it and get back to us!

Do you really want a manual to tow? Diesels are great with autos due to torque.
Its a nice truck. 150k on a 7.3 is low mileage, but it'll still have some old vehicle issues. That is a later grill, no biggie. If its a municipal truck someone swapped the front seats out as I doubt anyone ordered a municipal vehicle with cloth.

That color might look great in person or it might look like a$$. You might be cool with a manual, you might not. You might be able to live without a crew cab, you might not. The truck might be neat as a pin, or it might show well in photos but not so much in person.
Whatever, it's a fairly short drive from Lake O to Salem so, what the heck, go have a look. _

My father in law would not buy anything but a manual to tow trailers. Got the six speed instead of the Allison in his GMC diesel. That thing is a beast. Big as a house and ran mid 17s in the quarter for the magazines, high 17s with 2000 pounds in the bed. C'est incroyable!
Was able to hold off on this old truck. More recently saw a Dodge crewcab in the same hue, maybe 5 years newer, rather less old I suppose would be more accurate, left a note, no call. No pic of the Dodge, would have been willing to pay for that rust free gem ![]() ![]()

Grille is not from a later model but it’s a replacement grille. NBD. Truck looks really clean, I have basically the same one but in Lariat trim. This is an XL, basic/cheap trim.
Great work truck, has manual transfer case vs. electronic on mine, manual locking hubs, probably vinyl flooring in place of carpet, etc. I really like them in this spec but understand people wanting the luxury model if they are living in it driving cross-country. If you just need it for an occasional work horse, it’s perfect. Mine is a short bed extended cab like this one, great configuration for parking and maneuvering but that’s a relative thing with trucks. There is no reasons to spend stupid money on a pickup truck if this would fit the bill. |

That's a cool truck.
It might have been a loss leader special back when it was new. My brother bought a Colorado cheap when it came out with the new body style. His is school bus yellow too. If I was a Ford guy and looking for a 4x4 this would fill the bill nicely. I like the extended cab version too as the crew cab is too big, especially in town.

Damn. Thanks Speeder. I am absolutely drawn to the luddite version of trucks...
And, same reasons I am drawn to the short bed. I live in a non-rural setting and need to turn around at times. |

Signal Yellow is a great color for a truck but even better it's short. I was at Home Depot yesterday and 2 4-door long bed monsters were parked back to front across from each other, both against an island. The guy backing up couldn't after multiple attempts and had to drive over the island. I'm guessing the guy facing out pulled in from his other side.
