Dove with the 410
 

Picked up a 410 sporting gun this summer and have been shooting it really well for clays. Good enough that I decided to give it a shot at a dove hunt. Fortunately for me (and a buddy also shooting 410 that day) the birds flew close Saturday and we both managed limits.



I'm not a huge Rizzini fan but this particular gun (a BR110 sporter) happens to have the perfect weight, balance and shape for me. And 410 is an absolute hoot to play with thanks to the little 'pop' and virtually zero recoil.

The only shotgun I hunt birds with is a Stoeger .410 OU for all the reasons you mentioned. Nice little shotgun I took a chance on years ago for cheap.

I have a cheap 410 that I bought at Walmart for $75 a few years back. I love that gun...simple, light, quiet (for a shotgun)
I use it mostly for those pesky little red squirrels and chipmunks. Using bird shot, it's easy to take them out.

Gonna be pattern testing this weekend but if they pattern good I'll be using 1/2oz or 3/4oz #5 shot in front of 55ish grains of 3f black powder in a muzzle loading shotugn (well, single shot converted to inline muzzle loader) for squirrels and if I can find a place some doves.

I don't know what that gives in velocity but for dove i was using factory 1/2oz 8's at 1300fps. Plenty of juice if you hit them towards the front.

I read somewhere you don't ever want to pattern a 410 as it will convince you there is no point to shooting one! Hope you get good results!

I have a Mossberg .410, now 45 years old, we used to hunt quail and pheasant in MN. Great little gun.

The 410 has the same velocity but less shot load: is the way I understand it.

It just takes being a better wing shooter. My brother kills turkey with that purpose built Savage 301. It toppled them way out. I want to buy one, but I’m at the place where, “ one comes in, one must go out” Selling isn’t easy. I need to unload both Silver Pigeons.

Joel Etchen sells a lot of Beretta sub gauge combos and their 28/410 combos are pretty darned sweet. Not cheap but very nice wood. IIRC somebody here has the 20/28 combo.
