ID / credit card fraud
Last year, my SSN or some other piece(s) of personal info was on some list of personal data that got hacked, and I've received monthly credit tracking since as a result. the other week I logged in to the website that tells me my monthly credit score, and I noticed something off - it mentioned a credit card I didn't have, that had been applied for and issued within the previous month. I called Chase and after skipping through several layers of people I got the card canceled and the relevant info would be removed from my credit reports.
This is the first time something like this has occurred to me - is there anything else that may not be obvious to me that I would be well advised to do to make sure that one stays dead, or anything else to monitor? I noticed something else a month or two that may or may not be related - I saw something (similar regular-monitoring report, sorry but English is failing me slightly ATM) that made me wonder if someone had attempted SSN fraud using my number - did some digging and saw documents related to a court case where someone was convicted of SSN fraud, apparently tied to my number. As a result of this I found, or rediscovered, that I can log onto the SSA website and find the history of my SSA contributions (not much, since i've been in the public sector for years.) Nothing fishy seen there and they told me when I called that there was nothing to worry about.

Yes. And keep the needed information handy to unfreeze report(s). Or subscribe to a service that can do it quickly and easily for you on any bureau.

Freeze all credit profiles
Always use 2 factor authentication Use very complex passwords (+ 20 characters) If possible for you, don’t use a debit card ever. I was hacked several times 15 yrs ago and since doing the above, I haven’t had any issues. Obviously can still happen but knock on wood I’ve been lucky. A lot of bank breaches happen at out of way gas stations with card skimmers, etc.
