Doesn't the wingman follow the plane in this sort of situation? Seems like the explanation for the transponder being turned off goes away for a solo flight
Battery fire? Has battery backup power |
Not related, but vertical landing crash of an F-35 (not embeddable).

The resident of the home, in North Charleston, first tells the dispatcher: “We got a pilot in the house, and I guess he landed in my backyard, and we’re trying to see if we could get an ambulance to the house, please." The pilot then gets on the call to say: “Ma’am, a military jet crashed. I’m the pilot. We need to get rescue rolling. I’m not sure where the airplane is. It would have crash-landed somewhere. I ejected.” Sounds like something out of Gomer Pyle USMC. |

Unconfirmed, but grapevine had the aircraft in IFR conditions, auto throttles and altitude hold. However until the investigation gathers the info, speculation is just that. And as I did not read through the entire thread, every accident is classified as a mishap in the military. In this case, due to the total value of loss, this is a Class A Mishap. The safety program has a graduate level education for those that investigate - they will find out what happened, whether mechanical, systems, physiological, or pilot error.
