Anyone have a spare tire?

Anyone have a spare tire?😂

I was in the fast lane at the top of the Dan Holt Bridge on 526 in Charleston and got a low pressure warning. A few seconds later, my left rear tire exploded. I let up on the gas, a little bit, slowed down and moved over a couple lanes to get to the breakdown lane.

Turned the hazards on and drove slowly down the bridge, until I came to the first exit, which has a nice wide spot to stop.

I wasn’t going to be that guy, that breaks down on the bridge, and wreaks havoc with traffic at rush-hour.

Fortunately, I don’t think I wrecked the wheel, but I was ready to sacrifice it, to get off the bridge and not block traffic during rush-hour traffic.

Called AAA and they had me back on the road in 45 minutes.

Glad it wasn't worse! There are a couple/few bridges in the Tampa, FL area where I believe it's illegal to stop. They want you to keep driving (slowly) to get off of the bridge before you stop.

Last week, I noticed a vibration in my steering wheel when I bumped the speed up to get around someone. Today I noticed a noise that is noticable at around 60 and up.

It sounds like I've got something weird going on with a tire. I'm going to take the wife's car tomorrow, and see if I can get my car dropped off this week. I don't fancy a blow out in the boxster at 80+mph.

It's right there. Or is that one flat too?

I think I have a 265/65/18 in the garage. Has a patch, but holds air. You can have it if you can get someone to pick it up.

I was sorta kidding about the spare. Although after installing it, I need a new a spare because the one I have is nine years old and dry rotted.

I bought these Goodyear Eagle GT‘s from Tire Rack about 2 1/2 years ago to replace my Michelin LTX tires (they were on backorder) and I think they were three years old when they were delivered.

I just ordered four new Michelin LTX tires from Tire Rack and they will be here Wednesday. I have an appointment Thursday afternoon to get my truck aligned and I’ll have them install them, provided my spare tire lasts…

I was surprised how stable it was when it blew at 60 mph. I think what helped was, the rim was riding on the inside of the tire carcass. It wasn’t until I stopped and started looking at the tire, that it pulled off.

Although there is tread, I needed new tires, because of dry rot. It was on my list of things to do, but not this soon.

I checked the carcass, and there were no nails or penetrations in it. It seems like the side wall gave out.

I’m disappointed in that Tire Rack sold me four tires that I got 2.5 years out of a set of Goodyear tires.

You can see in the pictures below, the dry rot.

When I started the truck to leave, I got the check brakes warning, low pressure warning, and service advance trak warning. The brakes seemed good driving home. When I got home, I filled all the tires to 40 psi. I’ll see what happens tomorrow and if the warning lights come back on. Hopefully I can clear the codes if any and that’s the end of it.

Edit. When the tire blew, it sounded like it was beating everything to death back there. I was expecting to see a lot of body damage to the bed, but there was none. I did not see any damage to the hydraulic brake lines, but did notice the shock cover had flat spots. Also, I had to pull one of the parking brake lines back into its holder.
