Trying to figure out what car(s) I want when I retire in 7 years.
I figure I have one more restoration in me so choose wisely.
Up until recently it has always been a jelly bean color 2.2E Targa.
But now as I get older, im thinking it has to be an automatic.
So bought a 65 mustang coupe like I had in high school.
Nice car, but I really like removing a roof.
So found a nice 87 Mustang vert.
Nice car, but I really want 4wd.
So automatic, convertible, and 4wd.
Started looking for an early bronco, jimmy, blazer, scout, or cj7.

Warning ! I retired 5 years ago and thought restoration/project cars were out of my system . Then I found a Porsche 996 C4 with a blown engine . And the rest they say is history 😁 . Have fun with the Jeepster .

Just bought an old f250 for this. Used it today. Good times.

Original color is spruce tip green metallic.
Beautiful color so definitely going back.
Not sure what to do with mechanicals.
Definitely a disc brake conversion.
But what about the axles?
Dana 30 bolts right in the front and later ones have discs.
Thinking of getting a ~low mileage blazer with the 190hp 4.3 vortex and pulling the engine and tranny for a swap.
Or rebuild original Buick v6?
Any thoughts?

Agreed. Swap in a diesel. 4cyl Cummins is well thought of. Forget the designation but they put them in things like bread trucks. There will be an auto trans that will bolt right on.

Cool project. I had a full convertible top 73 Blazer in the 80’s. Loved it!

My old Dodge Dakota and my current X3 have spoiled me. My old(er) guy vehicle with be along the lines of a nice, comfy 4WD truck/SUV - probably a Honda Ridgeline Black Edition.

I'd bet that was a lot of fun Mr Bill. Back in the day one of my first cars was a Mini. And that thing was hysterical. I drove the snot out of mine & it didn't use a lot of petrol. Just quietly they also fit well on the average suburban foot path! :cool: ... I also owned a "Mini Moke" for a while but the feeling of being totally exposed on the road was something I couldn't get used to. In the end I had to move it on but I sold it for $100 more than I paid for it. :D

Just a thought... You could live well over 20 years after retirement. If you love restoring cars why not just keep doing it for as long as you can? My uncle is 94 and still drives a car almost daily & maintains a large garden in his back yard. He also looks after his ailing wife, my Auntie. She's late 80s and isn't doing so well. Every time I see him I ask him how he is and he always replies with "Not bad for an old man". :cool:

Yes, I have thoughts. If you want a project, go back to stock. It's easier as long as you don't get nit-picky about correct details, and it will be unique because these days everybody wants to turn their antiques into hot rods. It's hard to find an old truck whose history has been preserved.

Given your criteria you could buy a 5 year old Tahoe for $30k, saw the top off of it, and you're done. It would hit all your criteria and you would be time and money ahead.

Indeed. I was only 13 at the time, so I thought everything was great. I'd LOVE to have a Moke now.

One of my buddies that was much older than myself bought a new Jeepster because his wife wanted it. He said it was the only car he ever owned that would break just sitting in the garage over the weekend. He said they would go to the dealer and have them fix things, and drive it home park it in the garage, and Monday morning it had new issues. He said most of the mileage was driving it back and forth between the the dealership and home.

He finally had enough, and made the dealership buy it back as he was a really good customer. They bought some other vehicle and he was never so happy to be rid of a car.

Moke's are actually climbing in value but honesty... No thanks. I used to ride motorcycles a lot and somehow I felt safer on a motorcycle than driving a Moke.

If I had the money and needed a project it would be an MG TC. Or TA, just about the same.
