I really don't think it will happen, but then again, a lot of stupid siht that didn't make any sense sure is happenning today.

Retrofit with a Tesla motor and a modded BMW soundtrack... it's getting stupid.

When I read your thread title, Jeff, I thought you were talking about time running out on us boomers.

Hard not to think about our mortality when you get up in years......

Man, you aint that old yet. You are still a young pup.

I think about that all the time. The big 60 is creeping up soon enough.

TN has classic car plates that are far cheaper than regular plates but are supposed to have limitation as to when and where you are driving. Most people I know ignore the law and abuse the current leniency in order to save a few bucks. They will eventually ruin it for everyone.

LWJ 09-26-2023 06:56 PM

Spin up the article on “classic cars may be less worse than EV’s”...

pwd72s 09-26-2023 11:10 PM

It's not about clean air these days...it's about power.

Same in IL and KY. I think both restrict you to 2500 miles per year, and the cops may stop you if they see you out and about in a weekday during rush hour. I was stopped for it once when I decided to drive my classic to work on a nice day.

My tags for both of my cars are $25 for the tag renewal sticker, and I have personalized tags on both vehicles, that are $20 more. They are full tags, with no restrictions.

For both cars I have agreed value insurance, and the "restrict" the mileage to 6,499 miles per year. Since my commute is 14 steps down the hall, I don't come close to those limits. Even after a 3,600 mile round trip to California, and a planned trip to Missouri soon, and Arkansas in November I will not get close to the limit.

I foresee the price of gasoline per gallon as the way they will reduce the ICE engine usage. The Feds will eventually pass a Federall tax of a buck or two to be more in line with Europe, and keep handing out huge tax rebates for the purchase of "green" or electric cars.

Gasoline already has a huge tax burden to pay for to the corn farmers to raise food to be used as fuel. The farmers use produce tons of carbon by using diesel in the farm equipment to raise the corn, and tons of coal fired electrical plants to grow the corn and it is mostly a wash as to how much carbon it saves, but it makes for lots of jobs, and billions in taxes.

Last time CA tried to put a stop to older cars, not limited to classics, the SEMA lobby stepped up big time. Now, the older car thing might fly. It has already on diesel engines (you can still register an old diesel truck as long as the engine is newer than 2009 in a >14k lb truck).

I think it will be a long time, if ever, that one can't drive their '55 Chevy, etc., as a hobby car.

Personally I don't understand WTF CA is trying to do. With all the nasty lawn mowers and blowers going on all day every day, everywhere, how do they think classic cars are a realistic problem?

Furthermore, if whatever money spent on enforcing a ban on old cars was spent on forest fire prevention, we'd be better off by a wide margin.

Didn't they already ban small engines? I know my company can't sell our go-karts in CA anymore with gas powered engines.

pwd72s 09-27-2023 11:54 AM

Zeke, There ya go...hoping Government would be logical...

Tobra 09-27-2023 11:55 AM

I could tell you what California is trying to do, but then this thread goes to the dungeon.

MrBonus 09-27-2023 11:57 AM

As I understand it, some European countries already do this.

My state has severe restrictions on antique car operations but they are loosely enforced if not completely ignored. You basically have to pass safety and emissions once and then never again.

NutmegCarrera 09-27-2023 12:42 PM

Here in WI, we can put a “Collector” tag on anything 20 years and older.
Not a bad deal. After the first one - it’s only 2x normal registration. And it’s non expiring.
Only restriction is that we cannot drive them in January. What with all the salt on the roads.
Oh- and also exempt from emission testing.

So no more registration cost for the 996. Or my kid’s 88 Civic.

Comrade Newsom has banned the use of gas powered generators for homeowners to use (no new ones can be purchased as of 2028). This is freakin hilarious! The state that has a power grid that can't keep up with demand and if your house loses power you can't even take care of yourself. I bet Gruesome Newsom won't have the food in his fridge or his AC go down in the summer heat waves but the peons (thats the suckers who live there) can't have protection from power outages.

I had to catch up on this. Beginning in 2024 small off-road engines less than 25 HP will be banned for sale. This is aimed at the gardening equipment. I doubt if the guys at the kart track will pay any attention.

Joy ride karts sold at retailers might be a problem.

Back to the old cars; there are 2 refineries near me that are way high on the polluters list. It would take legions of old cars to produce as much pollution. Yes, CA is fighting them too. Might as well shoot both feet.
