How has PPOT improved your life??
Back in 2018 we were talking about grease guns and Seahawk brought this to our attention. I bought one right away and it got lost on a shelf until last week when I finally put it on the grease gun.
I don't know how I lived without it. It is a total game changer. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695828861.jpg I know the grease gun thing seems trivial. It's just what came to mind today. I can't list all the great advice I've gotten here, from health to car fixin' to house fixin' to dealing with the personal slings and arrows of life. Thanks guys. |
How has PPOT improved my life?
I have a network of people around the globe whose insights and friendship make me feel like a part of some giant family. Sometimes we bicker, we often laugh together more than anything else, sometimes we cry together but we are there for each other every time. We share things with each other we likely don't share with the people in our gravity world lives. One of my best friends who I can publicly say I truly love was a friend here for like 15 years? before I ever met him in person. It's a truly magical place and I am forever grateful that all of you are in my life. |

Even more important, I made friends is lots of other states. Seahawk's lovely wife cooked dinner at their house at the farm for my wife and I. I met up with Pete later that week, and got to see his lovely farm in Vermont. One of the former PPOT regulars served me BBQ and home brew beer in Salt lake City. I have met dozens of Pelican across the country. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695836217.JPG I met up with Wolfe and Dave at the La Quinta resort near Palm Springs this summer. The list of what I have gained from PPOT is as long as my post count. |
AI has nothing compared to the collective know how and experience of this board.

I've met some great guys here on Pelican. I hope there are more to come.
|
i’ve made some good friends here and others who would be if we lived closer.

Whenever I have a question, I think WWPPOT do. While anybody can Google some thing, it seems like there’s always someone, if not more, that has the answer here.
In addition, I’m exposed to all sorts of experiences, that I wouldn’t have otherwise. |
I now know the benefits of a good monkey roll...
Seriously, it’s a great fraternity. I learn lots. Have a peer group to connect with. And, y’all don’t talk about sports all the time. |
"How has PPOT improved your life??" - Immeasurably... It's like a super secret DIY club. ;)

I didn't have a life before PPOT.
I'm actually an eight year old boy and it's all made up. |

Whole bunch of this. Spider Robinson said that shared joy is icreased, shared sadness is lessened. This place has done both for many of us |

The breadth and depth of knowledge here has always amazed me. |
PPOT has been a great addition for me. I have friends and fellow enthusiasts here. This is where we can talk about the other things in our lives. Ask questions about refridgerators, other cars, hobbies, and our beloved pets. The kindness I have received here has been exemplary. The insights into possible purchases is a great advantage prior to buying dang near anything. Yes, like all forums...there are your typical curmudgeons, but even they have something to give. That is what PPOT has done for me.
Thank you all ! |
I don't do conventional social media . This forum and two other car forums is the only social media I do . I have had some great conversations over the years with some truly spectacular individuals on this site .
Just one example: Milt aka Zeke . A fine individual that I met here on the forum . Never met in person yet I can call him a friend . A highly skilled craftsman that is always willing to share expertise . There are sooo many great folks on this site . The knowledge base is huge ! Yeah we all started as car guys but it's so much more . We discuss medical issues . We discuss family issues . I don't think there is a topic we haven't discussed at least once . To me this place is cozy . It gives me comfort . I believe I am a better person having been exposed to so many great discussions over the years . Thanks to everyone that has contributed over the years and to those that will continue to participate in the future . |
I will second the comments about knowledgeable people chiming in to help with problems or to praise good work or solutions.
Maybe it's age, but I also think Pelican has helped me come to terms with the fact that although some folks have no clue what they are talking about, they will repeatedly seek to prove it in post after post. I sometimes despair over lack of reading comprehension or failure to just read the original post and the replies, but am learning to just 'let it go'. It is great to tap into the collective knowledge and experience. The more I learn I find I know less than I thought. To think I came here looking for parts. :D Best Les |

I learned that if I don't actually know about something that's being asked, STFU because someone here has BTDT.

Very early on as a member here, received invaluable information, untold advice and a fair amount of pity / compassion for my used; newly blow-up 911. Shortly after became deeply involved on PPOT as there were so many different people from all over with widely different backgrounds and professions. The 1 thing that united those was / is the 911.
Without help from other members, specifically with deeply discounted used parts, I'm not sure I would've been able to complete the restoration. Which, in itself, was by default.........good inspiring story. IE: nice car, blown-up car, then 17 yrs later completely restored car with lots of performance upgrades.. |
LOL .... I've got trees to plant... no time to read this thread now ... much less kill a few hours typing :)

This place is a really amazing resource. The collective knowledge here is truly incredible. You can ask the most arcane, random question and have an answer in 5 minutes. Not only that, but if there is a decent Volvo wagon with a standard transmission for sale in North America, Baz will have a line on it
Mostly, I come for the stories about dogs. |

Not PPOT specifically, but I showed up here at PP on the air cooled 911 forum when I bought my first 911 (still own it), and ended up with four very close friends from here. The gang as I call them. We chat and laugh every day (mostly via text these days as a couple of us have moved thousands of miles away and two have children now).
I count many more as friendly acquaintances because so many of you live in SoCal, which allowed us to gather at many of the same gatherings over the years. |
Years ago there was a thread about camping tents and how someone had one that liked and recommended it to others. The actual designer of the tent is a member here and commented on the thread. Incredible!
|
The wealth of knowledge here is only exceeded by the camaraderie and friendships. Whenever my Wife has a question or problem she will usually ask "What do your Porsche guys say/recommend?".
Everyone I've met in person is a genuine decent human regardless of how we may disagree (and have opposite views over on the Politics/Religion side). I can be an a-hole over there behind my keyboard but there isn't a single person here I wouldn't buy a beverage for or help in time of need. But my big dream is to someday be kicked upstairs to be a moderator. I hear those guys get paid big bucks and get all the chicks. |

I've met about six or seven plus screen name Pelicans IRL and am glad to call a few good friends. Dad always said "to be a better tennis player, you have to play against a pro". Cream of the crop. I'm glad to be the last pick aka odd man out here most of the time.

An unknown person that rhymes with Jeff Higgins has influenced my life decisions being on my 3rd Pcar............I'm fortunate he's only 45 minutes away from me and has been like a brother for 30 years.......

I have actually profited by being a member of this group. Prior to the sub-prime loan bubble, that was being called out here big time. I paid attention and put money on it. My wife and I saved up a healthy downpayment and got ready to strike. We picked up a shabby house in a nice area of Seattle, seller was motivated. It's worth at least 3x what I paid for it, and it pays me $1700 a month, and that is with an expensive property management company that does everything.
On a more personal note, I have definitely had some wisdom shared with me here. There have been times when I got it wrong on a personal issue, posted about it here, and folks set me straight. |

Many of you guys I consider fairly good/close friends. Even though I've never met you and have no clue what you look like!
Seriously as well, I know whatever I am trying to find out - I can make a post on the PPOT forum and get some very worthwhile advice or information! Oh - and without PPOT - I would have missed out on Roof girl! |
There is a man here who did work on my R1100S many years ago. He wouldn't take a dime from me. There is a classic thread on it somewhere in the archive. I've had the pleasure of riding with him more than once.
