911 deal ??

This is listed near me. On facebook. If anyone is interested post up.

1979 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa 2D $29,900.1979 911 SC Euro version targa. Purchased from a local estate. I was asked to value their non running old car, then I tried to get it running for them, ended up paying them what I thought it was worth and bringing the challenge home. Cleared old fuel and persistence paid off. Car is very cold natured, but does run well on the road, once warmed up. It does not always like to idle well. Tires, oil/filter and battery are new. Odo gears are broke. Forensics suggest a lower mileage car due to how old the old tires were, (from the 80's). Car has flaking paint as shown, but I can't really find a large repair, that drove the respray. Underside looks good, with very little rot, very little! Floor boards are good. Pinch welds are good. Leather door panels and rear shelf are very good. Targa top is good and unfolded. I replaced 1 oil hose and cleaned the engine/transmission down. Fairly dry as these go. Car has been dry stored since 1985. It hasn't been driven a lot since early 90's said the family. I already had too many cars before this one, just trying to get it to its' next home. Thanks

The only thing I know about 911 prices is, I can not afford them. Just posted this in case someone here was interested.

Sounds like a good project if you have the $$$ for buy in, time for lots of DIY, then whatever it takes to make road-worthy. Lot's of 'ifs' there......

Unless it's an absolute turd both mechanically and aesthetically, a reasonably capable DIY'er, particularly if they visit and take lessons from the tech section, would spend no where near thirty-grand to turn this old 911 into a more-than-presentable driver. Less than half that, I suspect.

I was just going to say this . The car needs paint, and if you find a few broken head studs, that car will swallow up 20k faster than you can blink an eye, even diy
Have you priced engine parts lately ?

Hmmm, no, actually.

The last air-cooled engine I completely rebuilt was from my 930, in 2014. With machine work (including twin plugs), full efi, new turbo, headers, SC tensioners, etc, etc, etc ... the total was well under $20K at that time. I guess I figured even considering what (insert PARF comment here) has done to cause inflation, that a n/a engine would still be south of what the turbo engine cost me.

Perhaps I should have studied up a bit before posting.

I said $30,000 because it needed paint mostly.

Some Porsche parts are at ridiculous levels. Cylinders for 3.0 and 3.2 engines, for example, are not that far off of prices for Lycoming or Continental aircraft engine cylinders (air cooled, flat four/six motors). When you think of the cost associated with certified aircraft parts (not to mention the litigation costs built into aircraft prices), Porsche prices are insane. Maybe Stuttgart doing a little gouging..?
