College football ... "fair catch" on a kickoff?
Just checking in on the Dawgs, and saw this....
A kickoff is "fair catch-ed" ... or "fair caught" on the 2 yard line and they get the ball on the 25? When, why, and WTF? |

The rule for fair catches on kickoffs states that the returner can fair catch the kickoff and if they are inside of the 25-yard line, the ball will be placed on the 25-yard line automatically.
If the fair catch is made outside of the 25-yard line, then the team will start with the football in that position.

It's a fairly new rule...I think it was changed less than 5 years ago.(maybe even 3 or less)
Before the change....it didn't matter where you were, it stayed where it was fair-caught.

My "understanding" was the rule change was to prevent injuries.
Lots of injuries during kickoff/punt returns as the defenders fly full speed down the field and hit the return man on a full open top speed run. So they are "encouraging" teams to fair catch more. My interpretation anyway. gary |

^^^ Yep.... I searched after Steve's post above, and it was 5 years ago .... I haven't been paying close attention
![]() Think I read where the NFL was trying it this year as a trial, but most NFL kickers have no trouble getting the ball into the end zone. It was a first time seeing and noticing the change ... for me. I have no problem with the rule change and understand why. Kickoffs wiil probably become obsolete at some point.... |
