How heavy is your keyring?

After having to replace a pickup ignition switch, I went light for the ignition switch.
How 'bout you?

heavy enough i've taken to leaving it in the truck when running in to the stores for a quick stop. I can just lock the truck from the outside.

cockerpunk 10-30-2023 09:33 AM

very. i have lots of keys. 5 cars, plus the garage door opener, 3 houses, bike lock, and bottle opener.

Paul T 10-30-2023 09:35 AM

not very....I have 2 keys, that's it. One for each house (every door in each place keyed alike). I HATE having things in my pocket....

Eric Hahl 10-30-2023 09:40 AM

2 keys and a fob.

aschen 10-30-2023 09:46 AM

Used to have more keys than a Columbian drug lord, but I keep them separate now and just grab the one I need.

GH85Carrera 10-30-2023 09:46 AM

Very light, under 2 ounces total.

I have the steel ring, one house key, one key for the El Camino, and the 911 key. I keep the hangar key and the airplane key in my aviation headphone bag, and I don't have any other keys except the fob to my wife's Macan. I keep it in my briefcase for a rare occasions I drive it.

Car keys on different ring than everything else

masraum 10-30-2023 09:59 AM

I've got it pared down to about as minimal as it can get. The problem that I have these days is that we have 2 cars, and both are fairly modern, so I've got the key to the Porsche which is moderately bulky, but not too bad.
https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-agcc...075343.jpg?c=2

And then I've also got the fob for the Outback which is bigger and more bulky.
https://oemcarkeymall.com/cdn/shop/p...g?v=1692827039

So with those and the few other keys that I have, there's more stuff in my pocket than I care for. I used to have one of these
https://images.thdstatic.com/product...278-64_600.jpg
So I could only carry the half that I needed, but it added more bulk when I carried everything, and I found that most of the time I was carrying everything. So now I have just a split ring with keys.

oldE 10-30-2023 10:13 AM

If I need a key, I take it off the rack. I have ruined enough pockets in the years I was working. No rings for me.

Best

Very light, as most ignition switches - way back when cars actually had them - weren't particularly robust.

It's largely a non-issue with newer cars/push button starts.

The puffball makes it easy to find my car key in my purse.

911 Rod 10-30-2023 10:56 AM

Separate key chain for every car with only one other key on it for my business. House is touchpad.

jcwade 10-30-2023 11:01 AM

A separate ring for each car and each is paired with a single house key.
All locks and gates on the home and cabin are keyed alike.

I just grab the ring for the car I'm taking.
If I'm not taking a car, I have another with a small fob, a house key and the mailbox key.

My keychain today:

But I also carry a backpack to work which is basically my man purse. ;)

Interesting and like many others:

Each car has a "key" with a house key on the ring. That is it.

Each car has a garage door opener integrated into the car except the LC. That opener might has well be from the 80's.

For all other locks, barns, stables, trailer balls (I have expensive ones and they are locked when in use, stored in the trucks when not) etc., I had a set of keys made for every car for every application, $10 bucks a car.

I leave the keys in the car if they are garaged.

ramonesfreak 10-30-2023 01:30 PM

911 key on right. Very light. The other is push button start so doesn’t matter but not very heavy. If Byron sees the bottle opener maybe he will recognize the Ringle quick release bottle cap opener. Bought it from the bike store I worked at in 1990 and has been on my ring 33 years. A good investment

Not heavy at all. I mostly keep one car key per key ring.

I have 2 ignition keys and a door key on my 356 coupe key ring, and my Speedster's key and the VW's key on my VW key ring. I don't know how either of them came about - it happened a long time ago.

Car key, house key and my wedding band on a simple key ring, that's it.
Why my wedding band you may ask? Well in years of working in manufacturing, wearing rings is a no no as they could get caught in equipment and cause a serious injury so I've always kept my wedding band on my key ring.

I carry my car key. That’s it. And three cards on the back of my phone.

No cash. No extra junk. I travel light.

WPOZZZ 10-31-2023 03:25 AM

Just my car key. The old cars have ignition switches, newer ones are puch button. The houses have electronic locks.

id10t 10-31-2023 04:38 AM

3 keys no remotes etc. Think the length of knotted 550 cord weighs more than the keys on it

That's a great idea! I think I'll try that.

Looks like you are missing a couple of 356 keys....

Here's mine - solomon bar knot is my daily wear - truck key, house key and house key for mom's place, grabbed the 356 keys out of the safe. 356 has glove box key, antenna key, transmission lock, ignition, and doors. FWIW, original fob and keys dad got when he bought the car new.

In the 60’s the good ole boys I worked with said….car key is just your car key and never leave stuff on your dashboard.

Just the fob, nothing else. Office and house are both digital or biometric entry, so no key required.

GH85Carrera 11-02-2023 10:51 AM

The ignition lock on my El Camino was totally worn out after 350,000 miles. For a few years I could pull the key out while the engine was running, and finally it got to the point it did not really need a key to start. I guess the engineers did not expect some fool to drive it 380,000 miles.

Anyway, I found a new in the box, OEM ignition key, that used a round key like for the doors. I had it re-keyed by a locksmith to be the same as my door key. So after 32 years of carrying two keys I now have just one.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1698947186.JPG

The keys were so worn out that to old ignition key broke in half when I dropped it.
So now I just have the round key to open the doors and to start the car. I never figured out what stupid reason they had for using two keys. That is fixed.

It is a real mouse trap pain in the butt to take apart that steering column with the tilt wheel but changing out the lock was a real improvement in the use of the car.

Cool, that you've got the original keys, but sheesh, why so many!?! "antenna key" and "transmission lock" - were those original? And the doors, glove box and ignition were all different?

I made a key fob like that for the missus. It's a solomon bar knot that ends in a small monkey fist.

Those keys remind me of some of the pics that I've seen on the Internet of things that get used a lot. A set of highly defined footprints on some wood in a temple where a monk stood every day for prayers, stone steps in a building with big depressions worn into them, a Roman road with cart wheel tracks worn into the stone, a spoon worn flat on an angle due to a grandparent using that spoon to stir stuff for many, many years.

Amazing stuff!

stevej37 11-02-2023 11:24 AM

Don't have a keyring. I just carry a fob or a single key for the other cars. The keys remain in the ignitions when home in the garage.

Locking glove box and the trans lock was standard on all T6 cars (last half of the Bs and all C/SC) and the retractable/lockable antenna was a factory option, though there is no radio (I have the Blaupunkt from the '63 dad had that was totaled, which lead to buying the '65 - last one for sale new in the SE USA) or speakers installed. It isn't really a lock, more like a weird screw head, the first bit is threaded in and you need the antenna key to turn it.
