Second one, not even close

pwd72s 11-03-2023 12:06 PM

Never liked Cobain's voice, so the choice is obvious to me. You do realize that You really got me is a cover?

I choose song #3

(Eruption isn't close to the best VH song, and GnR never "took" for me.)

I’d have liked GnR if they had a different lead. A male frontman would have worked. Can’t stand that whiny beyotches voice.

While I love Eddie, got to choose GnR here because it’s NOT a cover. Plus, it should be canon that Kink’s songs shall not be sung by non Kinks UNLESS they are punks.

mgatepi 11-03-2023 12:24 PM

GnR all the way

pwd72s 11-03-2023 12:26 PM

Whoops...just showed how little I know about Guns & Roses...never liked 'em. Van Halen another story...

Tobra 11-03-2023 12:30 PM

The part after the intro by Eddie is all superfluous

flatbutt 11-03-2023 12:35 PM

I have always liked McKagans bass line in Sweet Child.

You get it. While Eruption is all instrumental, Sweet Child has, I think, parts that are just as good and even better. Or maybe just different better if that makes any sense.

You have to listen to the music, not the song.

So timely! Adding these to my jukebox this afternoon:

GnR.

astrochex 11-03-2023 03:17 PM

I like SCOM as a complete song. I love Eruption (its quintessential VH in my book), but YRGM for me gets weird and less likeable.

JavaBrewer 11-03-2023 03:53 PM

I have not watched the OP links, assuming they are the original band videos. How did Foo Fighters and Cobain enter the thread?

Loved GnR but only for a few songs. VH has a huge body of work across multiple frontmen and they are just a handful of bands I can play an album (no longer in existence) without having to skip a song.

Since Foo Fighers were mentioned they also have some iconic tunes. Still my favorite rock song is by Smashing Pumpkins

PWD mentioned he did not like Cobain's voice but it was Axl Rose he was thinking of.

I choose GnR.

Please, don't muddy the thread with an off topic song again.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/freak.gif

I liked GnR and had a couple of their CDs, but I think that Van Halen especially with DL Roth was better. I'll have to listen to the two songs.

Eruption is killer, but is just the intro for "You Really Got Me". I feel like I'd have to compare that to "Sweet Child of Mine".

I haven't listened to GnR in a long time. I have listened to Van Halen.

There's quite a lot of structure in SCOM and it's simplicity is belied by the manner in which it is woven together.

eg...Slashes riff is 8 notes played in essentially a stepwise fashion. McKagans line is more complex and is set more or less as counterpoint to Slash's riff.

The drums set a rhythm that is (to my ear) anticipatory in that the second strike comes in just a wee bit sooner than expected which gives the song an edge.

If I had the score I could really make your eyes glaze over.

OK, I listened to most of both. From a musical standpoint, Sweet Child of Mine is probably a better song, but Van Halen back in the day with Eddie and Dave and the guys had something, an energy, that came through in their music. Eruption is still killer and "You Really Got Me" is also excellent the way they do it.

Thanks, hearing your more educated take on it is interesting. I tried listening to the parts in SCoM when I was listening, and it's a good song with a lot going on.

For me, that old Van Halen has an energy where the music transcends the rest even if there's a simplicity to it.

We all flashed in the pan at least once.

God, I'm feeling old....

It's funny that all Axl dreamed about was pretty girls and green grass. I mean..... that's all he needed to be in "paradise?" The modesty belies his reputation

Considering some of the current pics of him floating around. I think he may have wanted to pie or cookie or ice cream too. :D

Black968 11-04-2023 02:06 PM

I'll go with GnR, the Riff is so cool. If the VH song was Ain't Talkin Bout Love or Unchained I may have made a different choice.

look 171 11-04-2023 07:39 PM

Many of us grew up with VH, I did and learn to like them from Jr high on. Gun and Roses was much later at the point where I stop listenning to music. I don't know, I like 'em both but VH has that kick in the pants solo and they do a much better job in Pretty then Roy Oberson.

Baz 11-04-2023 09:02 PM

If you want a great VH opening riff.....look no further.......;)

Eruption and You Really Got me are two different tracks…

I’ve heard Sweet Child of Mine so many times that I look for something else on the radio when it comes on, lest I vomit up my last meal.

GnR had a few moments, VH kicks their ass, all day long.

A930Rocket 11-05-2023 03:41 PM

I’m going to have to go with Van Halen.
