Welding galvanised steel and chrome questions.
Hi Guys.
Mig welding galvanised iron. I've done it before, grind the galvanising off, weld the other bit of steel on, good airflow outdoors. But how toxic is it? Can I do it in a workshop type location? On a Honda motorbike the handlebar has got rusty. A new one is quite expensive. Can I get it re-chromed? And do I just sand and smooth the rust area and take it to some chroming place or is it a bit more involved than that. Thanks! |

My BIL is dealing with very serious health issues due to welding stainless for years. It's not a good situation. Galvanized can be dangerous too. be careful.

Bill, I've welded galvanized steel tube with it ground off but still felt sick and lightheaded after a day of welding. If you are doing a one time small weld you should be fine. But I welded all day long and will never do that again.
For chrome, you would want to just dress it with a scotch brite pad and let the chrome shop work on it. They will strip any existing chrome, use silver solder to fill pitting and then sand smooth and copper nickel chrome.

Thanks Guys. It's actually a day or so of work, so I'll do it outside with a good breeze blowing. I've done much the same project before outside in the wind and didn't feel ill. I have a nice new workshop, which would be excellent for this sort of thing haha, but I'll still do it outside.
And thanks re handlebar chroming. I may look for aftermarket handlebars that look much the same. |

Thanks Peter.
I've already got this one. I'm not sure it would fit under my welding helmet though. As a small timer the other fancier ones are too expensive. Maybe for the first time ever for me, Wellington's famous winds will be of use to me. ![]() |

Don't need the face nappies. But thank you for the links. It hadn't occurred to me that the above respirator would fit under my welding mask. It fits well

Many years ago I was pimping for a welder in the shop who was welding up pipe supports that were gal. He would send me out for a few quarts of milk. He would down one before starting and after finishing the day.
