The Holdovers
From the narrator in the trailer to how this was filmed, even the color of the film, this is a movies from the 70s. A little bit of nostalgia tucked inside a decent story but basically a no-frills movie that rests on acting and character development and an actual story.

Some really good movies coming out this fall! I already saw killers of the flower moon. Now looking forward to the holdovers.

If you go to 2:25 in the trailer and freeze it, the copyright date tells you what you can expect.

Just saw it. Excellent movie. One with qualities that you don’t see often anymore.
And as Shaun said, it looks and sounds and feels like a 1970s movie, in a pretty cool way. |
I liked it too. Nice to watch a movie that's not depending on the action and the scenery to be entertaining, Well written dialogue, good performances by the three main actors and (and the secondary players). (And since it's set in 1970, fun to see the old set props, like the in-wall sound system at the party.)
It reminded me in some ways of "The Squid and the Whale", or maybe somewhat "Paper Chase"; i.e., a very well-done character development film in an academic setting. Plenty of humor and plenty of touching, heartfelt moments. |

Walking around Boston last night, happened upon the bookstore that was in the movie.

Hey - thanks for the great recommendation - my wife and I watched it based on your suggestion.
And although I didn’t think about it, at the time, you’re right, it does “rest on acting and character development and an actual story” rather than CG, etc etc |
Glad you and your wife enjoyed it David, this movie is definitely a gem. A plus that you can lose yourself in simpler times for a couple of hours. That alone feels good.
|
I watched this at my sister’s last week while I was in town for the GP. She loves the movie. I enjoyed it too and will watch it with my wife when she returns.
|
Thank you for the recommendation. Watched it last night and really enjoyed it.

Any more hidden gems on Prime?
