What removes the pecan tree stains on a new deck?
 

We built a house with a humongous pecan tree nearby, and it has stained the front porch woodwork.

Short of replacing all of the deck boards, any solutions to get rid of the stains?

Before I started throwing chemicals at it, I wanted to get the PPOT brain trust thoughts.

The tree will do the same thing next year. Pecan trees are nasty.

Stain it all darker to match the stains?

Just be thankful that it's not a black walnut tree! Ask Steve about that.

That's was my first thought. Stain it as dark or maybe a tad darker than the pecan stains. And possibly, after it's stained, look into sealing it with something SUPER durable (maybe something for marine environments).

There are two main methods of removing stains. One is oxalic acid readily available in many brands and trade names at the home store. The next is a 2 part method available as a kit; it is 30% hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide mixed A and B. Good to get the kit so you get it right and these are strong so be careful and wear PPE.

There are some lesser known methods but it gets involved and some of the ingredients are not easy to find. BTW, vinegar will darken the wood. Ammonia does the same but used as a pre treatment helps another chemical bleach wood. This is getting industrial like.

Cutting it down and burning it, seems to be a common solution, when I googled it.

I’ll look for the oxalic acid. What would the two-part kit name be?

Can't give you a brand name because I buy bulk separately. j\Just look for something that says Parts A and B. FWIW you can get the peroxide at the beauty supply. The other online and it's 10x stronger than lye. Nothing to fool with and you likely don't need it.

Move the house obviously.

Stain it darker and start making pie.

Curious why the painted white parts are not stained.

Were these painted after and because of staining....or did they just not receive the same staining as the unpainted parts??

Baz, we always paint the risers, but not the treads. It’s just a look we do. We don’t stain anything, because it’s a warranty/maintenance issue down the road and we would rather leave that to the homeowners to deal with.

We are going to replace the treads. Not enough time with unfavorable outcomes.

Flip them over?

I talked to the homeowner today and told her we were going to replace the deck boards. She asked about staining them and I said to wait six months for the treated wood to dry out.

Then, their dickhead agent asked instead of replacing the deck boards, if we would cut the tree back some.🙄

It would be a hell of a lot cheaper to replace the deck boards, then have somebody prune the tree back.

We would have to cut back half of a ginormous tree, to do any good, and even then it would still be an issue.
