From recent Indy racing, Tom Sneva my favorite
Look how simple and beautiful that car is. Didn't know much about Sneva, back then we didn't know the drivers like now where we know too much, liked it better the old way
Not my picture, just borrowed ![]() And PS, safety not up to par as todays Last edited by yellowperil; 12-06-2023 at 03:01 PM.. |

I love open wheel cars from the '80's'. By the 80's, I mean from approx 77 to 94 for their simple lines, and amazing racing. F1, Indy car, F3000, F3 etc. But calling a car from 38 years ago 'early' in a sport (Indy/Indy 500) that started 112 years ago is a bit of a stretch!!!

Tom Sneva was in the Indy 500 broadcast booth for a short period. When he was there he said anything he felt, like, "That guy has no business out there." Unacceptable to the network so they didn't bring him back.
He had a wry wit and didn't seem to care if he offended. He was also a math teacher. He crashed a lot too. |

I always like the cars from a decade or so earlier.

The AAR Eagle on the front rowwwwwww.
Donohue won that race in the (customer) McLaren, he had to chase down Jerry Grant in another Eagle and got by with 25 laps to go... Penske's first Indy win.. Good times.

I lived in Speedway, IN (about a mile from the track) when I was a kid (1973 thru 1977). Met a few drivers, etc.
A classmate of mine went to the 500 one year (the year Sneva crashed and went into the fence in turn 2 - 1975?). Anyway my friend and his family were sitting right there at the turn 2 fence where Sneva's car hit. He told me his sister wet her pants. ![]() Couple of pictures my Dad took when he had pits passes one year: Mario: ![]() Roger Penske: ![]()

Always a Dan Gurney fan when I was a kid. Remember listening to the race on the radio.

Thanks for those great pictures. I got Penske and Mario autographs a few years ago
at St Petes Indy race. I was like a kid with candy. |
