Damaged dress shirt

Early other morning grabbed this shirt that had been dry cleaned lately but never worn. Closet light was dimmed down as my wife was not yet out of bed. Unbuttoned the top and third button to take it off the hanger and walked over to the mirror to put it on. Second button and square inch of fabric where it belongs is gone! I set the shirt aside and grabbed a different shirt and left for work.
Today wife takes damaged shirt to dry cleaners - that we have been using exclusively for 11 years since moving to this house. Wife just got home and says owner looks at damage and says no way did they do that and claims zero responsibility. I’m in disbelief.

That type of damage looks like it was caused by a mechanical process (damaged in a machine) not as if it got caught by a nail in the closet.

A nice tie with a Windsor knot will take care of it.

That was my thought, had to have been done by a machine. For me to do that to a shirt, I'd need a pair of scissors or a power tool of some sort.

But it doesn't surprise me. I think most dry cleaning places have a sign that says that they aren't liable for any damage to any cloths in their possession.

That's a nasty one. I guess cut the sleeves off and use it to mow the lawn now....

I took a suit in once to have it pressed; the moron left the hanger in the jacket, and pressed a perfect, permanent outline of a wooden hanger into the yoke of the garment.

I was traveling and didn't notice until I needed the coat, and I had no time to deal with the mistake between the event and the flight home.

Don’t throw it out!

Just for Schlitz and giggles, every once in awhile I get all wee-weed up in one of my 10 or so business suits which I’ll never (hopefully) ever have to wear again and go work in the yard.

Yep. On hands and knees in the dirt wearing a 3-piecer and tie.

Come to find out it’s an absolutely never-fail strategery to keep the neighbors from wanting to chat.

One infraction - probably - in 11 years. Kick them to the curb?

I would not.

Vicki says it was damaged by a machine pulling on the button. The button had to be pulled so hard that any human doing it would notice something was wrong and stop pulling.

If I ever move to where I have neighbors again, I'll be using this one! I'll bet it would work just as good if you were in a speedo or better yet, a thong.

Be careful; you always gotta consider sunburn where it don’t even shine.

I had been living in my current home for, say, 20 years, fairly regularly demonstrating an apparently disturbing habit of standing motionless in my yard contemplating nature and whatnot.

Well, it just so happened at the time that my neighbor’s kid was home from college as was my daughter at mine.

The neighbor kid motions to my daughter to come over to talk. He had something to delicate to say:

‘Do you know there’s a weirdo guy standing in your yard all the time?

‘That guy ain’t a weirdo. He’s my dad, he lives here!

No speedo, no thong, no nothing and I’m still a weirdo standing in my own yard.

I'd bring it back to the cleaners with a cheap bow attached to it.

Tell them this is a gift and it will be the last time they see your money after XX years of giving them your business so you hope he enjoys it instead of the profits from cleaning your clothes.

If the owner has anything to say other than some kind of offer to reimburse you then just smile and say 'enjoy your gift' and calmly walk out.

It won't reimburse the loss of the shirt but it will feel really good. For a loyal long term customer he should have offered something.

I'm just irked and frustrated that the dry cleaner didn't step up and offer anything as a replacement. And - I looked on line and can't find a replacement shirt. I found other shirts from the same maker - but not this pattern/colors.

And the other thing - this shirt and several others I've got they upcharge the cleaning charge a buck or two more than a regular dress shirt. Something about because the buttons are larger/thicker! Which to me - indicates there is definitely something mechanical in the process related to risk or this shirt requires more manual work. Either reinforces the fact that this shirt was damaged by them.

I highly doubt they dry clean the clothes themselves.

What is their policy regarding damaged items?

If they clearly state they are not responsible....and have done a good job for you in the past......I say take the high road and move on.

My 2 cents.....

It’s not the infraction - it’s the lack of ownership and responsibility for same.
