Looks fun

A930Rocket 12-13-2023 02:54 AM

Looks stupid and dangerous. I’m in!

astrochex 12-13-2023 03:22 AM

No brakes?!

Love the speed bump near the end.

hcoles 12-13-2023 03:44 AM

Many videos on YouTube for various classes.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-13-2023 04:26 AM

That looks insanely fun!

flatbutt 12-13-2023 04:39 AM

I could be the monkey!

Norm K 12-13-2023 04:52 AM

Probably not pretty when a couple of those open wheels come into over/under contact.

Sure looks fun though!

I was all in until they left the smooth road..
They need the French to be a governing body.

herr_oberst 12-13-2023 05:39 AM

Why doesn't the monkey push off, bobsled style? The big handles are right there! And who knew that rocking back and forth actually works! I love this!

I wondered why/if the rocking worked.

Maybe some rule about not being able to step off the rig once both guys are aboard?

A930Rocket 12-13-2023 10:04 AM

I was wondering about the guy not pushing bobsled style, but maybe it’s different classes or venues?

john70t 12-13-2023 10:15 AM

Check out the 'drift trike' vids. Also in the Alps.

pwd72s 12-13-2023 10:16 AM

at age 25, I'd have been in. Age 80? Nope.

Otter74 12-13-2023 10:36 AM

Looks positively safe next to this:

Rocking back and forth was popular in karting for awhile and so was hopping up and down in the seat. From a physics POV you get nothing.

I'll say this, those guys could take a lesson from bobsledders about tucking in tight while going straight. Get out of the wind. You wouldn't believe what a little bodywork does in karting. I could go 10 MPH faster at Willow with a full body and slunk down as far as I could get 6' to go. Actually with the same Yamaha motor on a sit up kart vs. a lay down the difference was 20 MPH.

Lower CG and less wind resistance will win every time with WR being the more important of the 2.

I was wondering about that tuck myself. Get down man! Even the soap box derby kids know to get the head out of the wind.

As a cyclist, I've found that when I'm in a tight tuck at 35+ mph on a downhill, I can slow appreciably for tight corners or the like just by sitting up incrementally; first the head, then maybe bring out the elbows and finally straighten the back and I can slow from 35 to 30 tout de suite and not have to upset the "chassis" (the frame) as drastically as is done by introducing mechanical friction (brakes) to the bike; it takes fewer pedal strokes to achieve the desired speed again when the road straightens.

Maybe they don't want to go any faster!

Gravity racing is a valid skill to improve maintaining momentum.
In the book Twist of the wrist they discuss racing from the top of a hill with the engine off.
Coasting to the bottom. Whoever touches the brakes loses.
Racing in a 3rd world country on modified taco carts dry humping each other not appealing at all. :)

Creating wind resistance can sometimes be useful in racing too. GP motorcycle riders will sometimes extend a leg and sit up higher to scrub off some speed for high speed corners.

This reminds me of my brother. When he first got interested in luge, they took a luge sled and put wheels on it. Then would go down big hills in the neighborhood to practice. Not much snow in Atlanta, so they had to do what they could. If you’ve never seen a luge sled, there’s no steering wheel or brakes, and you lay down on your back, feet first.

And if that's not scary enough, try skeleton.

Just like this:

That is newer and more advanced bodywork than I had.

That's how it looked in 1985 at Riverside going into T7.
