Searching for a New Vi(s/e)...
Went searching online for a new vise, after my eldest daughter destroyed my old 30+ year old Craftsman...it was worth it to read some of the product reviews, where the difference between 'vise' and 'vice' could not be funnier...these are actual, I-swear-to-God, non-edited screen grabs:

The only adVICE I can give is to buy a brand name good one. Even second hand. No Chinese.
|
Check out Craigslist or FB Marketplace. Buy a used US vise. Less cost and better quality.
|
The question remains, "How does ones daughter kill a vise?"

Disappointed in the responses listed in the OP. They could have been more detailed about the vice that they were enjoying. I’d like to know more from the guy who wonders if his new vice can withstand what he does in his shop. Also, “wtf are you doing in that shop?”

Ordered an older 5" craftsman old enough to be usa made, maybe 1990s off ebay for 110$ shipped. Came crammed in a large flat rate usps box, not much left of the box when it arrived, poor mailman

When the moon is full and I'm ready for some vicin', I head to HF. I'll usually pick up a couple of Lusts, check out the Greed and stock up on my Sloth for winter. I used to be an Avarice guy, but as I get older, that appetite has waned.

Really. After using an extractor socket to remove a rounded-off lug nut, she clamped up the pair into a vise and tried to break 'em apart. I suggested more torque, and a cheater bar was employed, only to fracture the vise. Sacrificed a $150 vise to save a $20 socket. :( |
Probably going with this 5-inch 'Doyle' brand at Harbor Freight...it is very close to the one I had, e.g., multi-purpose, pipe jaws, 360-degree rotation, etc. I don't do any real heavy stuff that would indicate a larger, more stout/rigid design, nor do I butcher much wood either, so for $170, this will get this job done, and for about 1/2 what a Wilton costs...
https://i.imgur.com/Y33NZjs.png The Wilton is 6.5 inches, but $350  : https://i.imgur.com/ifCK7xo.png Both are of Taiwanese origin... |
I have often lusted after a large vice than the one I have. It is the only tool I got from my mom's dad. It is a bit smaller than I would prefer.
Trying too find a quality vice made in the USA is going to restrict you to used ones. |
16 minutes....the Central Forge Robert mentioned is among them. Might be 16 minutes well spent before laying out the $. BTW, there are difference in Wilton vices...the Bullet not tested in this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFDOGoMXHNk&ab_channel=ProjectFarm Wilton site: https://wiltontools.com/vises/ The Bullet lineup. USA made: https://wiltontools.com/vises/bullet-vises/ (edit) My dad's old vise is only 3 1/2" Jaws...but WOW! Checking the Wilton site, almost a cool grand for a new replacement. No wonder some guys who came here have commented about it. |
The made-in-USA Wilton 'bullet' models are nice, but it's not as flexible as a multi-purpose style, which is what I had before. I liked that it could be rotated 360 degrees and had separate round-stock/pipe jaws. The general jobs I've needed a vise for could be done with no drama using a multi-purpose style.

Don't blame you for going Harbor Freight...any more than I blame myself for having bought mostly USA made Craftsman tools back in the day. Sure, snap-on was higher quality, but...$$$.

After I broke my brand X vice I found a used Wilton for I think it was $100 a year or two ago. I was actually looking at another device the guy had, but he suggested the Wilton.
The warranty expired in 1962. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703125686.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703125686.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703125686.jpg |
