LR3's are much more reliable than the Discovery II's that came before them and literally gave LR the terrible name that we all make fun of. A good scan tool will be needed and a solid mechanical knowledge is recommended. Stay away from anything rusty and they can be fun and enjoyable to work on. LR3's are very capable off road and can be "reliable" for a LR. I always played with Discovery 2's but rode with some very capable LR3's in our group. I miss the Land Rover experience but at this point in life we needed the reliability and towing capacity of the Series 200 Land Cruiser. I will buy another Land Rover for fun one day.

If you want a land rover: yes
If you want a good deal and this land rover happens to be a good deal: no |

He has parts too. This is making it very difficult to just walk away. The struts up front are new. The ones in the boxes are for the rear. Engine starts right up, runs smooth and quiet. 160k on the odo. No trouble lights, CEL etc...

No.
Unless you want a project. I guess it could be good he has a ll the parts, but it could also show you he is tired of screwing with it. 160K is a lot of miles. |
Flip it for $3K. Winner, maybe.

You know the old saying "Friends don't let friends buy Land Rovers."

Does it have the V8 or TDV6 engine?
The TDV6 engines in LR3 are well known for eating their own crankshafts. The only flaw with the V8 is a plastic coolant pipe t-piece inside the V that likes to break and cause coolant loss. |

Man, with that amount of parts included it is hard to turn down this deal UNLESS you can't install yourself. The main culprit on the lower suspension arms is the bushing I circled in the photo. When that MF goes you will hear it all the time. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704473148.jpg |
I've replaced lower control arms on both a LR3 and LR4. IIRC, the LR3 was a bit more difficult due to stuff in the way. For some reason they moved something on the 4 and it was a much easier swap. You can do all the paint marks you wish to try and align after the swap. But you won't be anywhere close to proper alignment and will be making a trip to an alignment shop. Hard to believe there is that much movement in those joints.

How's the underside wrt rust? I noticed the Illinois plates.

so here's the thing, I own a 2016 Range Rover Sport diesel with over 115k mil, it has treated me well with one exception. There is a software issue that has brought up a warning "DEF Quality, no restarts in 249 miles." Needless to say that can be an issue. A dealer has finally "fixed" it for me. We will see whether it is really fixed.
Besides that issue, this Range Rover is a joy to drive, substantial, quiet as a tomb, seats are very comfortable for long trips (think Phoenix to Laguna Seca in one go for example).I have added an aftermarket sound system (killer Audison system), a new android screen with apple car play, and some aftermarket 22's wheels for that great look. Came with heated and cooled seats, a frig in the console, towing package, panoramic sun roof, and a bunch of other stuff. With the diesel engine, there is gobs of torque and good mileage to boot (24 - 26mpg). If I sold it I am not sure what to get. I like the Cayenne but in driving, it is not as substantial feeling at the RR. Have not drive the Merc GLE, or equivalent Lexus. It is a quandary. I think RR issues are overblown. In looking through my records, the only big outlay has been one air bag, the compressor ($300), and the major service to replace the timing and high pressure fuel belts. I suppose by writing this, I have put the hex on the car. I just get the sense there is nothing that drives like a Range Rover http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704486226.jpg |

I'm likely going to buy it and make a project out of it. My 911 engine rebuild is almost done, so hopefully I wont have anything to do to it for a while. |
Please keep this thread going! Having bought some project cars in similar circumstances, you have my full support, lol. You have the advantage of time to go slow and see how it goes with minimal $$ spent (for now)!
