Ideas for Austin/San Antonio???
We is packing up the family truckster* and heading from Va. to Austin Tx. for my uncle's birthday on April Fools day 2024.
We will just miss the eclipse, but will be in Austin first part of the week, and San Antonio for the latter part. Looking for ideas please... Thanks, Ron *I lie. We fly. (also- as per Jay's suggestion, we are leaving our OCC choppers at home) ![]()

Check the COTA schedule. You may be there at the same time as MotoGP. 6th St in the evening is Bourbon St lite if you're into that. I highly recommend Iron Works BBQ but get there early. It's always a line to get in.

There is absolutely no reason to not stay in either city 2 more days for the total eclipse. Boarding will be expensive unless you're with family, but it's *ludicrous* to miss a total eclipse by a day or two.

Thanks for the ideas. It would make sense to stay for the eclipse if we could. I will check out the cota schedule!

For something unusual, Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio has a great medical museum if you are into those kind of things.

The 6th Street scene in Austin on a Friday night is real entertaining.

I’ve got family in Austin. I get there and San Antonio quite a bit. Be prepared for traffic. Lots of traffic. At all hours of the day and night.

Thanks all. My uncle is up in North Austin. We were there about 7 years ago. The traffic is an event. We are all in on the Alamo in SA and Riverwalk. She's looking for a place on the Riverwalk- you guys ain't kidding.
Pricey ![]() I just told my wife about the medical museum. I would do it in a heartbeat (no pun intended) - My wife and daughter, would probably need something else for them to do ![]()

If you do go to the Alamo you may be under whelmed. I was there many years ago and my reaction was "that's it?" YMMV

Natural Bridge Caverns and Natural Bridge Wildlife Safari, or Park, something like that. Place has exotic animals and you drive through. Two places near each other outside SA. I guess they might be freezing right about now. I remember there being good places to go out to eat in San Antonio. Riverwalk in SA has like a guided tour boat ride thing that is a bit touristy, but my wife liked it. Food on the Riverwalk was expensive and mediocre. The Alamo was smaller than I thought it would be. Lived in Texas 10 years, only time I ever saw a Texas DPS Officer take off his hat was in the Alamo
I thought the Capitol building in Austin was neat, I think they have a tour
