It’s a small world after all…

Our daughter went to the University of South Carolina. One of her friends was from Westport, Connecticut, where I grew up. We went to the same high school, Staples.

We met her friends parents at an oyster roast in Charleston SC today. I heard him say Westport and asked him about it. Turns out they live there and they were the parents of our daughter’s friend.

And talking to them, they asked where we lived back then and I said Marion Road. Turns out their good friends lived on Marion Road and to make it a small world, they lived in our old house, that they just sold. My parents had it built in 63 at the cost of $29k. They they sold it in the summer of 76 for $115k and thought they made a killing. The selling price a couple weeks ago was $1.8 million.😂

Besides that, it was interesting, talking to somebody from your hometown that you moved away from 48 years ago. It’s a small town, and some things have changed, and some things have stayed the same.

It’s a small world, but I wouldn’t want to paint it.

Wow that's amazing....truly small world, 930!

Speaking of small world.....you reminded me of the magazine we used to get growing up in the 60's......official magazine of the Volkswagen Club of America.......

The world really is small. Reminfds me of runniing into a guy from high school in the middle of a parade field at Ft. Lewis, another one on a street in Seattle, & yet another on a street in Madrid.

The strangest one I had was at a Backpackers hotel in Athens. I saw a woman from behind and thought that looks like my next door neighbour Helen Jameson. Then I thought I don't even like Helen let alone know what she looks like from behind. but yes, waited, and it was Helen so we chatted for a while. Then I went to the dorm room and thought I better introduce myself to the chick in the top bunk of the bed I'd be sleeping in. So the very next person I spoke to was my neighbour over the back fence

Our son introduced us to a new friend from Halifax before Christmas. While telling us about her family, it turned out they had purchased the house next door to the starter home we lived in 43 years ago here in the Valley, just before our son was born .

When I worked in tourism, I met folks who worked with people I met in my travels. The best one was a fellow from Wales who, when asked where his home was, mentioned a small village west of Knighton. I asked him what was being done to the railway viaduct the previous summer. He replied the masonry was being re-pointed and that his house was right by that viaduct. I apologized for parking in his driveway. :D

Best
Les

Back when we lived in Hawaii, my Aunt and Uncle and their daughter came to visit us. We took them on the ʻAiea Loop Trail which is a nice little 4.8 mile hike in the mountains in Hawaii. My uncle was a Methodist minister in Medford, OK at the time. As we were on the trail a couple were coming the other way and my uncle and the man in the other couple recognized each other. The other man had built the cabinets in the church Parrish that my aunt and uncle were living in. So thousands of miles from home, on a hiking trail on the side of a mountain on Oʻahu they met up.

Eerily and small world karma

I divorced in 2023 and have been checking out Dating Websites putting my profile out there.

A gal pinged me saying she liked me.

Couple of emails later, comes out she went to LHS high school. Graduated in same class as I did back in 1981 now 40+ years later.

Looked her up in my Year Book and I remembered her.

Turns out, she grew up in the SAME neighborhood as I, and lived only 5 houses down from me.

Way Eerie how she re-enters my life! We met up before New Years and had a great 2 hour lunch date. I want to see her again too!

It really is a small world.

In 1987 while in the Army stationed in Germany. I was selected to attend a French Commando course that was conducted in Northern France. US soldiers from various units within Germany attended this course.

One day, a week or two into the course, several of us are eating MREs, shooting the **** and talking about home back in the states. We're all telling each other where we are all from.

I say I'm from Portland Oregon. (I say Portland figuring no one wouldve heard of where i actually lived) One of the guys asks me if I actually lived in Portland and says he was from West Linn. I tell him I actually lived in Gladstone and that my best friend and a girl I dated were from West Linn. Of course we are both excited to see someone from home and continue to chat it up. I ask him if he knew the girl that I knew and he exclaimed yeah I know her! He then takes out his wallet and pulls out her wallet sized senior picture. I'm like OMG, I pull out my wallet and show him the exact same picture.......The whole group couldn't believe it. Actually all these years later, Im still tripped out about it.

It really is a small world.

Nothing like these stories has ever happened to me. Does that mean it's a big world?

In 76, I went to Auburn University for a weekend visit, to see if I wanted to go there. I was wearing a Staples football shirt and met a guy that went to Staples high school.

About 1979, I was in TGI Fridays in Atlanta, and as I walk up the stairs, to get to the upper level, I see this girl and she looks familiar. I asked her if her last name was McCarthy and she said yes. She also went to Staples and graduated two years before me, with my brother.
