Why do ‘Some People’ think it’s ok to park in Handicapped Spots?
Since moving my father close, I find more often than not, Skip the Dishes, Uber drivers, and others without a handicap placard are parked in the handicap parking spot we need with my did in a wheel chair. It pisses me off.
With my own leg situation, I am on crutches and an able to park in a handicap spot. Today took the cake… I was parked in a handicap spot and a driving instructor (complete with driving school sign on his roof) somehow managed to cram his car between my truck and the car next to me. What an arsehole! I had to put my crutches in my truck on the passenger side and then hop in the snow around to the driver’s side and struggle to get in… So do you park in handicapped spots? If so, why do you feel entitled to do so?

I often do when taking Cindy places...but then we have a windshield hanger placard. (Cindy has MS)

There are apps that allow you to take a photo of the vehicle and the tag, and report them.

I have permanent handicapped tags on my truck. If I can park within 100 ft of an entrance I'll park anywhere but distances of more than 100 ft are difficult for me and I must use my cane so I use the blue slot.
When the weather is bad / snowy / icy I use the blue slot but I never under any circumstance take the last available slot. People do it because they suck and there is generally no consequence for doing so.

I never park in a handicapped parking spot . I am fortunate to not need one . My MIL for several years had the blue tag due to a slight leg pain situation . I didn't consider her situation a handicap and would not park in a handicap spot when I was driving her car . The first time I did that my wife and MIL were upset . I told them both that spot is for someone with a real handicap .
I always dropped them off in front of the store/doctor or whatever location we were going to . And I would walk to the car and pick them up in front of the establishment . Over the years they would occasionally say park in the handicap spot . I reiterated you know my policy on that . I can only hope that my very small contribution helped someone that REALLY needed the spot .

Tried?? Don’t they answer their own phones?
The world has its share of a**holes for sure. Always has and as far as I know always will. I can’t get exercised about all of them. Not good for the blood pressure.

Hell no I don't. In fact, I reported it- the morons at the Discount Tire ran my e55 up on a curb in a handicapped spot and scraped my airdam. Long story short, I got a refund for tires I bought out of them for reporting this.
I was going to push it all the way to repaint/blend front bumper, reapply clear bra but I didn't feel like going thru the hassle and potentially having the bodyshop screw up a perfect nose. I just ground out the chip underneath, and took the cash. Just wanted to make sure that manager got a chunk taken out of him by corporate for such blatant stupidity. ![]()

And there seem to be a lot of people misusing Handicap permits as well. We went on sort of a group trip last year with several cars. One couple had a handicap license plate. That surprised me because they seemed to be doing everything the group was doing. Including, at one point, running across a beach and climbing on and over dead trees?? But every single stop we made they would find the handicap parking spot right up front, even if there was only 1 available
![]() ![]() The kicker was that often times the HC spot they parked in was only 25 feet from where the rest of us parked .... really, you can't walk the extra 25 feet? Pure entitlement mentality.

When I had my hip replaced, I had a temporary handicap placard for my rear view mirror. I used it for a short time until it was not painful enough, and I started parking at the far end of the lot again to avoid door dings.
One reason some people park in the handicap spots is they are nice and wide, and have enough room to avoid a door ding. One of my friends was retired Navy submariner and retired with a 60% disability. He got a handicap license tag, and loved parking up front. He was not very physically handicapped from what I could see, he was just one of those that liked to feel special. I have not seen him in many years.

You need a roll of those stickers that are used when someone is going to get towed. You put the sticker on and due to the adhesive and paper, it's a huge pain in the arse to get off. Because vandalism (tires, paint, etc...) is never really justified, but there are times when folks need to feel some pain for being an arsehole.

If there's no placard they need to be reported. But I've heard of folks getting harassed when they have a placard because they don't "look" handicapped. I remember reading a story 35 years ago where a guy in his mid 20s was frequently harassed despite having a placard because he was in his 20s and appeared very fit, but he had muscular dystrophy. He spent a lot of time in the gym to maintain his fitness/strength as much as possible but fatigued very quickly if he had to walk from the back of a parking lot.
Still, there are lots of times that I see someone with a placard and think it's BS. But I don't say anything because you never know what's really going on. I'm sure that there are dirtbags that have a placard that are gaming the system. I'm also sure that there are folks that have a placard because they "take care of granny" but probably use it when granny isn't with them. But there's always going to be those folks, and you can't tell who is and isn't by appearances. It's better to assume that anyone with a placard is legit. If there's no placard or plate, then they need a sticker or several.

I just key the cars. They know why when they come out. I do it surreptitiously so no camera would prove it. I carry a tire valve tool but it's a little obvious stooping next to a tire. I can use an ice pick standing, pretending to read my receipt. I do this a couple times a year.
If I see the person leaving a cart in the spot I make fun of them yelling at them, "You expect the next person to get out and move your cart before parking?" I'll get shot someday but I'm old and might get a few shots off myself before going down. this is primarily why I limit getting into a car much more than once a week. Always some siht going down. Won't go to a shopping center after 8am. I won't let my wife out after dark. Well after crashing my Jag, she quit driving anyway. So it's just doctors visits. Groceries are picked up in their designate parking. Now that's funny because no one parks there. |

I miss my old Jetta. I could park with the passenger side about 4" away from the *******s. If they wanted to dent my car, that was fine with me. I may have also accidentally tried to open my passenger door and dented their car.
I own an industrial building across the road from a U-Haul truck rental facility. U-Haul rents dozens of trucks, but only has three parking spots. People think it's okay to park on my property for the day while they use their rented truck. They often find themselves blocked in when they come back. ![]() I have zero time for people like that.

I would never park in a handicapped spot ever, unless I were handicapped. Seeing how that "drivers instructor" car was parked like that would've prompted me to wait until the A-hole came back out to get in their car, it would not have gone well. Some people are just jerks and just don't care.

"Why do ‘Some People’ think it’s ok to park in Handicapped Spots?"
Because it has been a selfishness free-for-all out there. Increasingly. Some of our "leaders" have championed the freedom-thing to the extent that you can do anything you darned well please regardless of decency or even law. Quote:
You don't know what's going on inside someone else. You should know that their life is likely, or at least certainly can be, more difficult to handle than they show on the outside. Sometimes tragic. Judging is something we were specifically told not to do. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. Do you know why? Well, because then when judge them, they are a mile away. Plus, you have their shoes.
