Arriving in Monaco?

Dunno quite how to react to this one. Not a world I'd like to live in, but the scenery is nice?

I bet the people are more high maintenance than the cars.

Nothing newer than about 30 yrs old there does anything for me. The DB5, Testarossa and 911 longhood at the beginning are all that really stick out to me.

Age does funny things. I never liked the Testarossa, thinking it was too big in the ass but it’s grown on me.

EDIT: I don’t understand that whole lifestyle. I am far from wealthy, but the wealthy that I envy live much more low profile lives. There must be so much stress with maintaining those appearances and unwanted attention that may come with it.

I can think of two clients, I don’t know their personal business, but one I know, along with his 2 siblings inherited, their father’s company. The father had a net worth in excess of $750M.

He drives a Ford Explorer, wife drives a Grand Cherokee. The father passed about 5 years ago, dying in the 3 bedroom ranch he raised his family in.

Another client, along with his brother own a $1B real estate portfolio and he drives a Subaru Impreza.

Either can walk anywhere in the world they care to without any fuss, fear or anxiety.

I guess I'm old. Gorgeous women who wouldn't even give an old catchers mitt like me a second glance are a dime a dozen; I've also gotten over any excitement that an unobtainable sports car might have once held, and going to clubs to drink or gamble hasn't been on my wish list for decades. (HSAT, yes, I'd like to tappy-tap-tap some of that arm candy. I might be old, but I'm not dead yet)

This is just excess consumption at the highest level. These videos might as well be from another planet.

They’re not happy! As to what Wilnj said, a good book to read is The Millionaire Nextdoor. Many very wealthy people live in modest houses, drive modest cars, don’t wear $10,000 watches, etc.

This although I felt humbled by some of the beautiful cars (The two tone Bugatti for instance).

For me, having real money should be about freedom.

"from another planet" is an apt description.

Has anyone been to Monaco? It is a really cool little place and the people that live there will tell you it really is just a little village.
Having spent a night gambling in Monaco and watching the excess was a great experience. The regular citizens are not even allowed to gamble in the casino. Never seen so many Russian, Oriental and Middle Eastern people looking so bored with literally millions of dollars of chips in front of them. Everything is in excess. It is great for the show that it is.

The old Top Gear did a feature on why so many F-1 drivers live in Monaco....They speak of the climate, the beautiful scenery, etc. but it's really...no income tax.

I've never been there.

My step-dad is like that, nice comfortable house, drives an old Buick Lucerne that looks brand new, and yes he actually is a millionaire.

The only real classic would seem to be what I'm guessing is a Ferrari 512TR at the head of this thread (near the end of the video).

I had the pleasure of tooling around in one of these - a showroom condition "special edition" (as a passenger) Pre-M (still had the great pop ups) for about an hour a few years back...with a guy who obviously knew how to drive!

We took a train to Monaco from Southern France for a day visit a few years ago. As an F1 fan for over 40 years, it was awesome to walk the race course. It’s amazing how much better perspective you get in person. Big elevation changes, super close to stores, restaurants, and water! More Rolls Royce’s than there are in the factory. Several exotics seen and heard driving around. Regular folks swimming at the pool in the middle of it all. Had a beer a Rascasse. Fortunately we got tired and took the train back before the wife had a chance to go purse shopping.

That’s me arriving in Monaco in my ‘56 VW (with roof rack) more than 50 years ago:

Have you seen the film, “Austin Powers?” I have news for you…someone being worth one million dollars isn’t rich. Not even close. Maybe in 1972.

As to this thread, I’m amazed that someone is just now discovering that Monaco is a playground for the rich and hedonistic. It may be the most famous place in the world for that. With a million dollars, you want to stay in Kansas. Trust me.

One time for me to agree with you, Denis...a million only makes one willing to live a modest lifestyle "comfortable". However, there are many not obsessed with money or luxury goods who are quite content with being so.

I live way below my means, in Los Angeles. It’s a great life and the food is fantastic. It’s the key to not winding up in a tent.

Ha, funny thing is we are a lot more subtle around here. Only the very educated eye can spot who's got money and who hasn't. The ones who try to look like they have got money certainly don't have money, or old money anyway.

Funny thing is I end up going to the dump shop (recycling shop at the landfill) a couple of times a week. A beautiful drive around the coastline and enough to get the 911 warmed up. And there is often a slightly funky/bohemian looking chick there called Ella. Only I know the facts because I worked for the bank and we used to look after her family's fortunes. Occasionally the guys buy her lunch not knowing her family are one of the richest families in NZ.
