Getting Really Tired Of This!

And so it happens…tooling along in my 944 minding my own business - when suddenly out of nowhere in my rearview appears some yahoo in a souped up/tricked out Civic/Neon/WRX/what have you ricer, just itching to engage in “a bit of fun.” Or maybe its some recent American muscle - its front end designed specifically to intimidate…those two inner rounded fog lights glowering like some giant, angry, and deranged insect.

Yesterday morning it happened twice…first time on a long open stretch of about three miles (one of my favorites for getting my car up to about 80 and holding it there) - and, lo and behold in the rearview there appeared a large/ugly dirty red pickup…dual oversized stacks belching and twin flags flapping, passing me like I’m standing still, barely on the edge of control. Second time was in my own neighborhood…purple Neon suddenly hard up against my tail, itching for a fight…then roaring around me right in the middle of some blind twisties. Insane! In my own neighborhood! I’m getting too old for this!

It takes some humility to drive a slow car that other people perceive as fast .
Everybody wants to tell their friends they smoked a Porsche
The rednecks enjoy rolling coal on me in the boxster and 914. Good thing I like the smell of diesel .. I give em the thumbs up and move on about my day .

Try driving an orange R8. Every one wants to race you, escalades,f150s, all BMWs, hondas, etc.

Funny enough no Porsches, Lambos. They just wave or flash lights in approval

They got all that juice and nowhere to use it in real equal competition. They are missing something in life. And then you happened to come along. I've driven Neons at speed and they are not slow. On a track they would not last long though against, say, a 944.

The law of probability will eventually catch up with them. Hopefully it will be a singular property incident.

Strange, I must be oblivious. In over 20 years of driving a 911 I can't ever recall stuff like that happening.

I have driven my El Camino for 32 years and over well over 300,000 miles. It has only happened to me twice that I noticed. I 100% ignore them. I had a pickup right on my tail on the interstate, when I was in my 914 many years ago. The exit I took to get to my neighborhood was favorite corner, and it was decreasing radius to a very tight turn and stop. I never touched my brakes in the turn, and just hung on at the limit of adhesion. It was very satisfying to see the pickup go off into the muddy grass and not stop until the slope of the overpass concrete. The road I take goes right past that overpass and I tapped my horn and waved to him.

It has never happened to me in my 911, or if it did, I was oblivious.

Around here, it's the Mustangs that will roll right up tight and try to pick a race.

The big pick-ups pass everything on the road....they hate to follow cars, no matter how fast the car is going.

You need a Cayenne Turbo S… problem solved.

I'll admit it I had to check this original date of the thread, thinking it popped up because someone resurrected a 10-15 year old one.

A Neon? Really? Yes, I understand that there was a niche community that built them back in the day of the first couple of F&F movies, but a Neon? Heck, I don't even recall the last time I saw one moving down the road under its own power.

In any case, when out in the wild in my not-quite-stock 930, I always took pleasure in ignoring such challenges, versus engaging the other driver in any meaningful way.

Had it happen yesterday . Driving the Porsche on a 2 lane 45 mph speed limit road . I was going 50 when a Toyota pickup was fast approaching in the rear view mirror .

He was right on my bumper and I stayed at 50 . He eventually passed me on double yellow lines and I gave a friendly wave as he blew past . Idiots are amongst us , just ignore and keep moving forward .

john70t 01-24-2024 06:04 AM

I consideration, these people would be doing all of that anyways.
But the "Porsche in front" is certainly a red cape in front of an angry bull.

In the the old Subaru on Huron River Dr twisties, I has a Miata pull up and we had a nice jot at 70% effort until he passed ahead when it was safe. But he wasn't a d*** about it. Just wanted a little sprint.

VINMAN 01-24-2024 06:11 AM

People are shocked when I explain to them how "un-fast" my 944 is. I tell them the average soccer mom suv is faster. Hell, my Superduty will leave it in the dust.

If only it was well set up.....:p

.

fanaudical 01-24-2024 06:15 AM

I have this happen relatively frequently around here. I just wave and let them go by. Sometimes I detour onto a twisty road requiring some skill to drive just to see if they follow. Some do, many don't. Often those that follow find out that driving straight is much easier...

Get something like this. It worked for me.

Ask the douche.... Would you race grandpa?

Surely you meant to use green font for that.

I've had it happen while in my 996. Like others have said, they want to say they smoked a Porsh.

Every morning I take one road to get to I-10 for the trek to my office downtown. That road is 45mph and if you do 45 you will make every light green to the interstate. One particular morning a bunch of folks were doddling around (actually that is every morning). I got myself to the far right lane for a red light. When I took off on green some DB to my left that had been on a Sunday stroll up to that point decided that no way was I passing him. I couldn't be bothered and let him go and got behind him and took my left turn onto I-10. I'm sure he told his buddies at work that he blew away a Porsh this morning. Knucklehead.

HobieMarty 01-24-2024 06:23 AM

I get this all the time in my 2000 Lexus RX300, gotten pretty used to it so I just ignore them. I'd smoke just about anything anyway, it's got a V6 ya know. [emoji6]
Now where's that green font??? [emoji16]

Funny you should say that. I had it happen in our '86 MR2 and in our '87 924s, but not in the '69 E. In a thread a few years back I related some really dangerous behavior by the driver of an old rusted out Mercury Lynx around the 924.

I find when I drive my 996TT it makes people angry. I just smile and wave.
When I drive my red 86 911 it makes people happy, but 20 years ago it made them angry.
Strange world.

I used to get it in my old '88 targa. I even occasionally got it in my miata (which seemed silly since it had 133hp). I don't remember getting it in my boxster. I guess they all assume hairdressers don't race. :D

I always win those contests using the clever strategy of not engaging.
