There were a lot more islands and they were closer together. England was part of Europe. Australia connected with the main land and Siberia and Alaska were connected by a vast plain.

But we were talking of voyages made around 2,000 years ago, not the 20,000 years ago of the ice age. 1,500-2,000 years ago, the planet's geography looked much the same as today.

This thread got me thinking about the guy following airplane contrails while I was sitting outside a local restaurant today. The second pic is a zoomed in first pic. They were clear as could be in real life. The camera doesn't do it justice.
Maybe I'll paddle a canoe to Hawaii this weekend :)

Yes, but these land masses showed up on ancient maps.
Perry Reis map for example; showed the ice free coastline of Antarctica BEFORE Antarctica was discovered.
