This happened not far from where I live. The terrain is rough there with lots of boulders and dense chaperell. At the time, the weather was horrible - rain, snow, winds, clouds down on the ground, and I can imagine it being easy for an aircraft to get into trouble if even the smallest thing went wrong. A very sad thing.

5 Marines died, all in their 20s. This is a sad time.

Hard to know what happened. Other than the names/ages of the five deceased soldiers and the type of aircraft they were flying, no details have been released. God speed.

In general the crew made it past (west of) the high point of the Peninsular range there, as one travels along I-8, but the weather was bad and snowing. Spacial orientation, and icing were highly probable issues the team faced.

Nothing other than my sorrow.

Hopefully they will figure this one out...as Marv mentioned, the area is very rough and the weather was awful.

Incredibly tragic because it seems like it didn't need to happen...what was so urgent about getting from one base or facility to another stateside that they flew into that storm? I have a sense that the military is a lot about keeping schedules and "wheels up at zero dark-30" type stuff but they were at a routine training exercise and going back to the barn, so to speak.

So sad and maddening.

With all due respect. Two aircraft should of gone on that training mission, one aircraft looking out for the other acting as a team. Am I off base?

Are 2 aircraft going to make a difference? There were 3 officers already on the helicopter that crashed. If weather related, at least one of them should have come up with a better idea than flying into the ground. That said, I can also see how training in bad weather is important but at some point, it gets to be too much to continue at that altitude in that weather. Of course, it's easy to see/say something like that in retrospect and from a distance.

edit: I hope for the sake of all those on board and their families, something out of their control is found to be the cause of this tragedy.
