"Bob Marley: One Love" Movie
Last week, my youngest daughter (26 years old) and I saw "Bob Marley: One Love" at the theater. We anticipated this was going to be a fantastic movie because we are both fans of Bob's music and story.
Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. We had trouble understanding the lines and the story was disjointed. It did not do a good job connecting Bob and the audience. Either way, it was a fantastic day to spend with my daughter, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 42% and I agree, David

I came away with mixed feelings.
It basically starts with when Bob got shot in his home and focuses mainly on the political turmoil in Jamaica at the time and Bobs effort to stay out of it. It does sprinkle in some flashbacks to give you context on very early days but I did not walk out thinking I'd learned something about Bob that wasn't already known. Yes if you've not been around Jamaicans you will have trouble with the dialog, sub titles would have helped some people for sure. It was just OK, I'd wait for it to come to streaming.

That's what I was assuming. Between what can be a strong accent, and potentially the slang, I could see having a hard time understanding a movie set in Jamaica. Some folks have a much harder time understanding people with strong accents. My wife prefers to have subtitles for folks that are speaking English with a strong accent. I usually do fine without.

Jamaicans speak Patios, which is sort of a creole mashup of a few languages and dialects..

A friend of mines son just finished at Berklee. He is such a talent. He was a freshman when my son was a senior in HS and they played together in the schools Jazz ban. I am not a musician but the level of his play just jumped off the stage immediately. To Bob Marley. 'Exodus' was a revelation to me. In 1980 I did my one and only rafting trip as a boatman on the Grand Canyon, 12 days. In those days, you had to row a baggage boat or get instruction with another guide before you could take people down the river. 12 days. The Canyon, btw, is not one gigantic rapid: There are very long quiescent periods and the wind can make oaring a baggage boat a chore. I was a very experienced boatman and kayaker but the Canyon was on my list so baggage boat it was. I had a Walkman cassette player and would, since I was last in line, listen to music on the long oar tugs. 'Exodus', 'Somebody Loan Me a Dime' and others got worn out. Thanks for the memory.

Creole has a French lexifier, the base vocabulary of the language / dialect. Patois' lexifier is English. Linguists refer to it as Jamaican Creole but that's not really accurate but can be if you define Creole as a mashup and not a unique language. It's more accurately Jamaican Patois. Fooking confusing as hell. One of my stepmoms was Haitian and they speak Haitian Creole. It was always interesting when she met a Jamaican and they'd use Patois with her. Her general response when hearing it was something along the lines of "i'm not your sistah you dirty Jamaican......insert words the forum filter will reject." Apparently Haitians and Jamaicans don't get along? Or it could have just been her, I was always afraid to ask.

I saw the preview and decided against seeing the movie. The led actor was so over the top with his movements and expressions he looked like he doing a parody. I really like Marley and there is a great biography of him out there somewhere - you can probably find it on YouTube.

That's disappointing to read, I thought the movie was going to be stellar.
They should have cast Ziggy Marley to play his dad. Yasin

I liked it, and it was endorsed by the family. I saw it as a biography, warts and all (not fiction).
