Cayman R expert(s) on trhe board here?
I am looking at a Cayman R .
B4 I take a 3000-mile trip, and even B4 a PPI, I would like t know what some of the experts here think of it . I just might be a pig..... Thanx |
I installed a set of Cayman R exhaust. Reason for that was it was given to me, free, from a friend because he was building a race car. He wanted a free flow system. I tell ya, its sound pretty mean but it is a bit loud for my taste on longer drives. I no longer need the "look at me" noise and no need to have the additional 8.567 hp gain from the R exhaust. Its on there for now, its fine but when I think about it, the noise is there.

You are selling it?
Do you know what brand it is? interested. |
WOW!'
Never mind at least not this time. I just discovered that PDK wants a $10K, to $20K service and ONLY Porsche sells the parts! I had no clue, i was expecting]g maybe up to 5K. I am no longer enthralled with another Porsche Tax plus excise. Mag cases, bad guides, 5-bladed fans , etc etc etc Then IMS, scored cylinders, etc etc etc. I starting to think A weekend in NV at the table would be more fun... GEEEEsh |
987 or 981? Anywho, is look for a stick one.

Oh, my car is a 987.2. Not sure aobut the newer cars. I would no problem with their 4 banger turbo jsut for the driving experience. They love to be thrown into the corners.

As for me, I had no idea the dual-clutch trans is an automatic and a standard melded together with computer sensors in each section.
Plus a computer in the car to sort it all out. With a Valve body and all. At 80K these seem to come dwn with problems . Sensors inside. People are figuring these out, but a liability to contend with if it starts to act up The internet is full of rumors, plus Porsche will tell you these are NOT repairable. (well they are if you are part genius I guess) But Porsche just wants to sell you a new PDK, for 20 or 30 grand. So I am here trying to sort out If wanting to own such a car with PDK is a good idea...If living in a Ca maybe, as there is a lot more shops and experiences to draw from. Scary. Tomorrow is a new day and someone may have a better idea. |
A normal PDK service is roughly $600. Ours (2015 Macan S) was replaced (under CPO warranty) when it took a dump at like 65k miles. The dealership told me retail was $30k, $20k for parts, $10k for labor. Engine out. Hard to be believe, but there you go. The service manager told me he'd only seen one other like that. Ours was very well maintained. I've decided to do the service at half the factory interval. Just did it at 85k. It's my wife's rig and she loves it. I would never have bought it. I tried to get her to buy a new RDX at the time. When doing my research, I was finding independents were figuring out how to repair them, but I haven't done a deep dive.

The PDK is cool, but I prefer a manual. If I did a lot of track driving, I'd probably love a PDK. |

I spent a couple hours getting adjusted mentally.
I too thought they were just a standard with dual clutches. with a couple servos, NO! Lots of magnetic sensors living in oil to read where the shifter shaft (forks ) are. They do have gear sets in one end, and a dual-clutch pack in the other. It is not a simple setup as we all thought, and the chickens are coming home! Believe me, I am too chicken to go down the wicked Porsche path of righteousness. Again. Porsche's SOP is to say_ -they are not fixable AND SELL YOU A NEW ONE! (25K or something like that!) Now anything is repairable (included in links below) Feel adventurous? But you need Porsche tech tools on the side to talk to the computer, even if you have the parts and abilities. We thought pulled studs and Mag cases were bad?? That was a walk in the park comparatively. Believe me, I am not trying to start a new religion here. I would love to own a PDK But unless buying new, I had my eyes opened B4 getting blindsided with a HUGE bill! There is a R model for sale on the West Coast with PDK and thats how I get all Twitterpated. It has been on the market for a reasonable price for quite some time. I dug deep and now I am pretty sure why I know why. Pruse through all this and I am pretty sure I have made the right choice -Run Forest RUN! https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/1172826-guide-to-repairing-a-pdk-transmission.html https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/1172826-guide-to-repairing-a-pdk-transmission-3.html Repair in Ca https://www.brrperformance.com/porsche-pdk-transmission-now-repairable/ |
I have under 110,000 on mine and just drove it to vegas for a construction show last year. I drive it pretty hard too and am not too nice to it. They are reliable but there's always the one or two I suppose that can go bad. Keep fluid changed out and you should be fine. Have you driven a PDK Cayman? Do put in sports mode when you do if not, its lame.
|
Never drove one,
I just want to know what the worst case scenario is . In perusing the net, they seem to be reliable BUT If it bites, it takes a pretty big chunk out. |
If it bites the dust.... Swap the 6mt into it.

It all makes me think about going back to the simple little 911

Repeat after me, "Don't give your wife a PDK", "Don't give your wife a PDK". She bought a VW TDI with PDK in it and backs out of the garage and puts it in drive. She has never used the paddles or the sport shifting program to shift it. In fact she love it so much she beats the crap out of all my cars w/ manual transmissions by slipping the clutch and hates it if I ask her to drive one.
